In 2019, Castle Fine Art was given access to one of the largest collections of Marvel comic book art in the United States. From these archives, a selection of rare editions – all hand-signed by Stan Lee – was curated into a dynamic and eminently desirable collection of Marvel fine art.
These graphics provide a snapshot into the early modern era of Marvel Comics. Fans will instantly recognise the significant illustrations by some of the world’s most acclaimed comic book artists, including John Romita Jr., David Finch, Gabriele Dell'Otto, Sara Pichelli and Marko Djurdjević. Never before exhibited in the UK, the third instalment of The Legacy Collection boasts covers, splash pages and double-page spreads that showcase legendary superheroes like Iron Man, Wolverine, Spider-Man, Black Widow and Captain America.
To echo the vivid colours and dynamism of the original large-scale artworks, each graphic has been created by a specialist atelier team using the fine art giclée printing process. This painstaking technique captures the fine details of the original works, including the meticulous shading and ink strokes that added a new dimension to the costumes, weapons and explosive fight scenes.
Presented in a modern black frame, each image is represented in three edition sizes: a deluxe edition of four, a collector’s edition of 10 and/or a standard edition of 99. Few were signed by Stan Lee, making the collection even more desirable. The range of complementing sizes also allows collectors to curate their own body of work.
The Legacy Collection commemorates not only the extraordinary triumphs of the characters, but those of the original superhero: the late, great Stan Lee.
Alongside his team – which included writers, pencillers, inkers, colourists and letterers – Stan brought the world’s best-loved superheroes to life. More complex and human than their predecessors, these incredible characters started a conversation that transcended the speech balloons of the comic book pages and can still be heard today.
As an art director and editor at Marvel Comics, Stan believed that comic book art should be considered a legitimate art form. He explained: "Comic book art is really just as beautiful and requires just as much talent as just about any other form of artwork."
"Comic book art, whether covers or insides, I think will take its place alongside of every type of art that's venerated in museums and galleries."
27/01/2017Before his tragic passing in November 2018, we were able to catch a rare glimpse of an artwork signing by the editor and creator of Spider-Man, Hulk, Black Widow and Doctor Strange.
08/06/2018This stunning Marvel collection is hand-signed by Lou Ferrigno, who starred in the original CBS TV series, The Incredible Hulk.
20/11/2020Don't miss the remaining graphics from this popular Marvel collection. Featuring artworks from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the hand-signed release includes the Avengers, Captain America, Silver Surfer and Wolverine.
