Animal instinct with Robert Oxley

As a passionate conservationist, Robert Oxley couldn't resist when the opportunity arose to spend some time with a pride of rather big cats. We caught up with the painter, who received a commendation from the esteemed BBC Wildlife Artist of the Year panel in 2010. For more big cats, check out Robert's We Three Kings collection!

Painting cats

Not since Simba graced Pride Rock in The Lion King has a cat captured the public’s attention like Maya from the BBC Two hit television show, Big Cats About the House.

After watching the adorable jaguar cub grow into a fierce feline, Robert knew he had to do something to help the Big Cat Sanctuary in Kent. Putting paintbrush to canvas, he created an original artwork to raise money for the charity.

Being able to help in this way is a great achievement for the painter, who is hugely passionate about protecting animals’ survival against poaching and habitat loss.

Robert met Maya for the first time in May, when he unveiled his portrait.

He says: “Meeting her was a thrilling and humbling experience, and something I will never forget. I am incredibly lucky. As you can see, she approved!”
