Award-winning international sculptor Marco Olivier is known for his emotionally resonant and highly tactile works, crafted from an array of materials including bronze, resin, and recycled ocean plastics.
Self-taught and driven by resilience, Olivier blends anatomical precision with expressive storytelling, often exploring themes of transformation and nature’s fragility. His pieces range from intimate portraits to monumental public installations, each carrying a deeply personal or symbolic message that invites us to connect.
Olivier creates many of his widely celebrated works at his own foundry in his home city of Cape Town, a dynamic space where he explores a wide range of techniques - including bronze and aluminium casting, sand casting, and open mould casting.
In more recent years, Olivier has explored the importance of nature in his art. Joining the Robben Island Clean Up Program, where he helped remove truckloads of ocean plastic from the island, ignited a fire within Olivier, leading to the creation of his series, The Fragments Collection.
This innovative collection is composed entirely of sculptures made from recycled ocean plastic. Each face serves as a testament to both the resilience of nature and the transformative power of art. This commitment to sustainability and creativity caught the attention of the South African Plastic Recycling Association, which awarded Olivier for utilising recycled plastic to create stunning works of art.
His sculptures speak with quiet intensity, leaving a lasting emotional imprint on those who encounter them.
