Lessons Learnt | 2022

From Turkish sand to heirloom beads, the second instalment of Nic Joly's miniature yet massively moving collection Lessons Learnt features a range of unusual materials, hand-embellishments, and crucial messages learnt from the artist's life. Following on from Nic's successful launch of the powerful collection in mid 2022, that saw him create bold word-based wall sculptures including 'Love Life', this release harnesses more symbolic representations of life through intricate figures and scenes. A lone astronaut in space, a man and woman stranded on an island, and a couple atop a boat on a rocky sea. The result is a series of bold, colourful and exciting miniature wall sculptures that also portray relatable, heartfelt messages. More personal than ever before, the 'lessons' behind these works are inspired by Nic's own experiences, providing an unprecedented and intimate insight into the life of the artist as well as instilling the pieces with heartening depth and authenticity. To find out more about the incredibly unique materials used in these wall sculptures and their meanings, click on the individual artworks below for their descriptions. 65 Weeks | 2021

As he recently revealed in our IGTV video series, the new 65 Weeks release from Nic Joly is the British sculptor's most intimate and ambitious series to date. A personal sketchbook of the weeks following Boris Johnson's announcement of a UK lockdown, the 3D wall sculptures were handmade in his Hampshire studio, making each one unique. Featuring his signature miniature figures, the small-scale works boast handwritten elements and intricate details, including hand-cut tissue paper and replica mobile phones. Available in an extremely limited edition of just 65, they are both humorous – including a raunchy sex scene and the toilet paper panic-buying fiasco – and poignant, exploring Nic’s struggle with depression and the love he feels for his wife and children. Nic, who has also created an NHS-inspired artwork, says: “When we all woke up on 23rd March 2020, none of us could really understand how our whole world was about to change forever. We were all suddenly given a focus, a spotlight in our lives and the world we live in. I wanted to do something hopeful. Smiles are far more contagious than any virus will ever be.”

The Writing's On The Wall | 2019

This exciting chapter in the visual narrative of Nic Joly harnesses the public candour of street art within the refinement of fine art. Balancing stylised subtlety with bold statements, Nic once again delivers his recognisable punch of humour. Much like the graffiti we walk past on a daily basis, Nic uses the art that hangs on the walls of his collectors’ homes to bring his message into the public forum. Inspired by World War One: Never Forgotten | 2018

British artist Nic Joly has raised over £80,000 for The Royal British Legion through sales of 'Never Forgotten'. From the sale of each piece, Castle Fine Art will donate £100 to the charity to help Nic reach his goal of raising £150,000 to help support veterans past and present. Drawing on the ultimate symbol of remembrance and hope - the poppy - the signed, limited edition miniature sculpture was released in August 2014 ahead of the 100th anniversary of the outbreak of the First World War. The edition size of 1566 represents each day the war was fought, and each sculpture is labelled on the back with a unique piece of information about that day.

The artist

Nic Joly

What began as Nic Joly's hobby has transformed into a passion for sculpting minute depictions of everyday life. The British artist's 3D wall sculptures tackle topics like love, sex, mental health and war in a touching and humorous way.

In 2024, we celebrated Nic Joly's tenth anniversary with Castle Fine Art and remembered the intricate details tell stories of moments lived, emotions felt, and a journey embarked upon. As Nic reflects on the last decade and his past creations, the spirit of experimentation and the passion for self-expression is a reminder that Nic's artwork is an extension of him and the thoughtful, considered miniature works he creates. Nic's 2024 collection,The Next Chapter, references Nic's evolving creative journey with his progressive techniques, unexplored themes, and sentiments yet to be unravelled and miniaturised. With renewed determination, Nic is ready to embark on The Next Chapter of his artistic journey.

His detailed pieces are full of hand-crafted mini people in an extraordinarily detailed background, which are all made in Nic's studio in Hampshire. Nic carves his figures as originals in wire and plaster before they are cast in solid bronze using the lost-wax process which is a method of metal casting whereby a molten metal is poured into a mould that has been created with a wax model. Once the mould is created, the wax model is melted and drained away.

When dry, they are sanded down (either with a belt sander or a teeny-tiny strip of sandpaper) and cleaned before being hand-painted. The scaffolding is brazed with a blowtorch to create texture and a natural colour definition before being cut out of the thin plywood. Once Nic has all of the necessary parts, he can begin the painstaking construction, which can include installing anything from LED lights to replica mobile phones.

Nic's artistic career was born in a stained glass and metal workshop. Inspired by the European painters Hieronymus Bosch and Pieter Bruegel, he explored his own unique style and began to create his tiny figurines.

He studied at the Winchester School of Art and was initially creating these tiny theatrical figures and scenes for his children, crafting them and placing them around the house for them to find. He was still working as a furniture designer and maker as his full-time job, so Nic would literally carry the tiny figurines round in his pocket so he could work on them at any available moment. He later bought a shop where Nic was selling his own designed and made furniture, then also started selling his art, which flew off the shelves, and his full-time art career was born.

Nic has turned his hand to LED technology and 3D printing, and to make his incredible pieces, he has experimented with everything from Japanese inks to toilet roll, acrylics, soil and glitter to bring his miniature scenes to life.

He is a great student of the human condition and is unafraid to tackle life's difficult subjects head-on. Nic's openly emotional pieces make a huge connection with his many collectors, who often tell him what they mean to them. 'It's really humbling to hear that my art touches people'' Nic says.

In 2024, we celebrated Nic Joly's tenth anniversary with Castle Fine Art and remembered the intricate details tell stories of moments lived, emotions felt, and a journey embarked upon. His collections have taken on every facet of humanity from sadness to joy. To date, he has raised over £80,000 for The Royal British Legion through the sale of his 'Never Forgotten' sculpture, which commemorated the fallen soldiers of World War One.

His 65 Weeks collection revealed his thoughts, observations and emotions following the announcement of the UK COVID-19 lockdown. The pieces were both humorous - including a raunchy sex scene and the frenzy of panic-buying toilet roll - and poignant, exploring Nic's struggle with depression and the love he feels for his wife and children.

Other creations include a pair of works celebrating Valentine's Day, and his Hands On collection which still included Nic's 'little people' but took his work in a new direction. Hands On had been his secret private passion project since 1997, and the collection was named in honour of his roots of his former life as a carpenter and In many ways, this work was Nic revisiting and reflecting on his former self and bringing the experience and skills of those early years into the present. Showcasing both original wall-hanging and freestanding sculptures, Nic used an ink stamp of his own hand throughout the series alongside a striking colour palette, polished bronze sculptures and carved 17th century wood.
