Summer 2025

Following the success of his well-loved Party Animals, Nigel Humphries has centred the iconic teddy bear as the subject for his May 2025 collection. Dressing the anthropomorphic bears in the style of different subcultures, the artist uses layered sentimentality to evoke strong feelings of nostalgia. The quintessential childhood teddy bear and the aesthetics of subculture movements combine to create a broader cultural nostalgia for bygone eras in a whimsical and playful way. Teddy bears are deeply ingrained symbols of comfort and innocence, so their recontextualization into these subcultures is thought-provoking. A hybrid of real and toy animals, the bears are incredibly expressive, using just their eyes and the angle of their heads to communicate with the viewer. Although the bears are all the same size and design, Humphries gave each of them its own personality through their individual aesthetic. We see piercings, hats, tattoos, and colourful hair amongst other accessories. Wanting to retain the ‘toyish’ look of the bears, Humphries chose not to clothe them, instead experimenting with a new concept of adding design elements into the fur itself. The artist hopes that these intricate details allow the viewer to relate to the bears as adults, whilst being reminded of memories from their youth.

A New Hope | 2021

Featuring a convoy of Star Wars’ best-known characters – including Luke Skywalker, Princess Leia, Chewbacca and Darth Vader – Nigel Humphries’ intergalactic new collection is a must-have for any fan of the legendary sci-fi film series. Behind the scenes of these hand-varnished giclée prints was the miniature painter's very own movie set, complete with his signature character setup and ripped paper motif. The small-scale artworks took the contemporary painter back to his childhood, as he rewatched the original films and listened to John Williams' breathtaking soundtrack for inspiration. Alongside his limited edition works, we also have a rare selection of original drawings and oil paintings, each of which has been sketched on paper by Nigel's own hand or painted on a fine-grain Italian canvas.

Mixtape | 2019

2019 was a year of pop comebacks, with the Spice Girls embarking on their surprise UK tour in May and ABBA announcing the autumn release of their first new music in 35 years. Boasting a line-up to rival them all is Nigel Humphries' Mixtape series, which features classic singers and bands including Queen and David Bowie. Following the success of his superhero series, Nigel has untied his cape and dived paintbrush-first into the history of rock and pop icons. The collection takes us back to an era of homemade cassettes and, like any good mixtape, it’s eclectic but it’s one you’ll want to repeat over and over again!

The artist

Nigel Humphries

Recreating a child's enjoyment of creating their own adventures with figurines and imagination, Nigel's artworks allow us to revisit the awe and wonder of our younger years. His adorable miniature paintings capture some of the world's most iconic characters, from Marvel and DC Comics superheroes to real-life music stars and the cast of the Star Wars saga.

Nigel Humphries is passionate about recreating the feelings of childhood nostalgia and will always go that little bit further to add extra magic to his paintings. He is skilled at evoking the youthful wonder of losing yourself whilst playing with a favourite toy, and also bringing his fine art mastery to create the scene.

As an incredibly skilled contemporary still-life artist, Nigel is always driven to achieve perfection in his work, both to satisfy his artistic development and the demands of fans of the characters he paints. He always researches the look of those characters in depth by watching films and listening to their soundtracks as he paints, as he's very aware that collectors expect the details in his works to be totally correct. Another part of creating the detailed look is the use of toys in his studio which are carefully posed in a still-life scene.
