Faithful Friends Collection | 2022

Yorkshire-based sculptor Roxy Winterburn’s previous collections for Castle Fine Art have often featured animals from around the globe, but her latest work comes much closer to home, and very close to her heart. ‘Shelter’ is a new limited edition bronze, featuring a horse sheltering a small child, showing the intimate relationship between horse and rider, which Roxy says “is like no other”. She has ridden horses since she was three and wanted to portray the relationships she has forged with them in her work. “As a young child I used to ride an old piebald horse called Kasey,” explains Roxy. “I always felt as though he was looking after me and like he was full of wisdom. ‘Shelter’ represents that kind of a friendship - the horse being a guardian to the vulnerable child who in turn offers the horse a new lease of life and freedom”. The versatile artist and chemist has a diverse background in art, science and animal conservation. Blending all three passions has allowed Roxy to forge a unique identity as an expressive, stylised sculptor with a keen eye for detail and talent for producing high-quality bronze works. Her background in chemistry has greatly influenced her patination techniques; Roxy uses different chemicals to produce some exceptional finishes. She now uses her own custom chemical mixtures to create patinas, individualising her as an artist, and makes every work entirely on her own.

Tsavo | 2022

Roxy returns with Tsavo, the latest addition to her Circle Of Life series, named after one of the oldest and largest parks in Kenya which she visited during her childhood. “The first time I [visited] I was seven years old and honestly, it’s still my favourite trip I’ve ever been on,” explained Roxy. “I have made some incredible memories in that magical place which will be with me for a lifetime.” The versatile artist and chemist has a rich personal history with art, science and animal conservation. Blending all three passions together has allowed Roxy to forge a unique identity as an expressive, stylised sculptor with a keen eye for detail and talent for producing high-quality bronze works. Notably, a background in chemistry with forensic science and toxicology has greatly influenced her patination techniques; Roxy uses different chemicals to produce some exceptional finishes. She now uses her own custom chemical mixtures to create patinas, individualising her as an artist. The addition includes ‘Aurora’ the baby giraffe, ‘M&M’ meerkats, ‘Pickles’ the pangolin -- the most trafficked endangered animal on the planet -- and ‘Honey’ the warthog, which Roxy named after her experience with a sweet-natured warthog in Kenya. From conception to completion, Roxy makes everything entirely on her own. Each piece is crafted in England and all carry unique features as a result of differing patinas, which cannot be replicated. "Every day in the workshop is different from the last, which is what makes it so much fun," said Roxy. "Some days I may be sculpting, but others I may be making moulds, doing lost waxes, or welding and chasing the bronzes. I can complete every part of the process from the very beginning of sculpting right to the final patinated bronze."

“It’s all about nature’s way of taking and giving back to the Earth. Animals are there for you no matter what. There is always a love there from both sides.”

The artist

Roxy Winterburn

Drawing upon her love of Disney and memories of her childhood travels to Africa, Roxy Winterburn creates adorable stylised sculptures inspired by the animal kingdom.

As a child, Roxy accompanied her father - the sculptor Steve Winterburn - on his trips to Kenya. Here, she saw a baby hippo in the wild and visited elephants at an orphanage. This, combined with her love of Disney, sparked a passion for capturing the unique characters of animals. She is also inspired by Leonardo da Vinci and strong female figures like the Suffragettes.

After graduating with a first-class degree in chemistry with forensic science and toxicology, she set herself a one-year challenge to make it as an artist - ultimately attracting the attention of our publisher, Washington Green. Her debut collection, Circle of Life, is named after The Lion King and features circular forms to evoke happy emotions and symbolise how everything in life is connected.

An advanced open water diver, she has dived in the Mediterranean, Indian Ocean and Egypt. She is also an award-winning powerlifter and is currently working towards getting her private pilot's licence. She owns a 1968 VW Beetle named Pumpkin, whom she is lovingly restoring back to his former glory. Roxy says: 'It's all about nature's way of taking and giving back to the Earth. Animals are there for you no matter what. There is always a love there from both sides.'
