The Copper Collection | 2021

Adding a warmth to any home décor, metallic art is one of the easiest ways to update your interior design. As we reveal a selection of copper-inspired cityscapes by Paul Kenton, we're taking you through some of the ways metallic art can help you to modernise your living space. Featured by Harper's Bazaar and House Beautiful, the timeless elegance of metal has been incorporated into almost every aspect of contemporary design, from copper fixtures to chrome lighting and stainless steel worktops. Reflecting the light beautifully, these lustrous accents can give even the smallest or minimalist of rooms a luxurious feel. Copper in particular can create an inner glow and offset darker colour schemes or contrasting textures like velvet and wood, so it is little surprise that it has been hammered, chased and engraved since medieval times to decorate homes. Bringing this trend into the 21st century, The Copper Collection includes three hand-embellished artworks that capture lively scenes of London and New York. Following extensive research, our specialist atelier team selected a stainless steel base with a copper ink treatment to replicate the textures and tones of the original copper artworks. Find out more about the process below!

"If you look closely at all of my paintings there is a lot of abstraction within them - it is only when you look from a distance that it all comes together."

The artist

Paul Kenton

Paul Kenton is a UK-based contemporary artist, acclaimed for his cityscape paintings which capture the unique energy of cities across the world. Paul's paintings aim to transport the viewer, giving them a sense of the distinctive mood, pace and light of a scene, through layers of bold colour, dripped lines and gestural paint marks. Kenton is constantly exploring new ideas for paintings in his sketchbook, painting en plein air, drawing not only from cityscapes, but also from his fascination with motorsport, the sea and pop culture.

He is especially noted for his dynamic, monumental evocations of New York's city streets, but paints many other of the world's greatest cities with subjects including Venice, London, Tokyo, San Francisco and Paris, as well as impressive mountains, including Mount Everest and Mont Blanc. His pieces also feature nature scenes, from impressionistic lily ponds to timeless pictures of English woodland.

Like the Impressionist painters before him, Paul evokes moods and emotions with his colours, free shapes and energetic lines. Famed for his dazzling cityscapes, he effortlessly captures the hustle and bustle of the city, and also the world's natural landscapes, which he creates in his incredible studio in north Devon. Paul's purpose-built studio is housed inside an old gasworks that dates back to 1868 and features stained glass windows, industrial steelwork and original brick walls.

Travel is an integral part of what fuels Paul's inspiration. He will plan trips to places with the intention of exploring, but it will be the light he sees which naturally takes his interest. Paul is always 'searching for the best light', whether it is through reflections in monumental buildings, the dappled lights of the ocean or the natural light of the countryside. Paul is famous for his hugely popular Instagram Live and TikTok sessions, where thousands watch him create his spectacular pieces.

He is not inspired by any particular artists, instead evolving his own style over the last 20 years, and his work has been exhibited internationally. Paul was born in Derby in the late 1960s, but his family relocated to north Devon when he was eight years old, a move which looking back was pivotal in Paul's development as an artist.

He showed an interest in painting from an early age; while others wanted to be doctors or pilots, he remembers telling a teacher that he wanted to be an artist. This was cemented when, aged 12, he won a national colouring competition - winning a prized set of paints. It was also around this time when Paul began his lifelong fascination with the sea and surfing. He continued to draw and paint all through school painting in watercolour and focused on capturing the many moods of the north Devon coast.

For all his passion for international travel, though, it's to Devon that Paul loves to return. Despite being a master of cityscapes, he still describes himself as 'a country bumpkin', and one subject he returns to again and again is his local beach. 'It's both tranquil and full of life,' Paul explains.
