After Warhol: Uniques | 2021

Almost 60 years after its 1964 release, Andy Warhol's iconic Pop Art interpretation of Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis has been reinvented by the London-based artist Paul Stephenson for a contemporary collection of original art. Available in 40 different colourways, these hand-painted silkscreens were created using Warhol's original acetate. Used to imprint the image onto a silkscreen, this clear sheet was the last part of the process to be touched by hand by Warhol and now provides Paul with the exclusive key to the authentic reproduction of this seminal portrait of the former First Lady of the United States. "The end result is exactly what you would see in a Warhol painting hanging in a Tate Modern retrospective exhibition," says Paul, whose groundbreaking After Warhol project saw his work titled 'posthumous Warhols' by the late Warholian expert Rainer Crone. "At all stages of making these paintings, it's always been about following the process and being accurate and true to what Warhol did."

After Warhol: Cow Series | 2021

Displayed at galleries like the Tate and the Museum of Modern Art, Andy Warhol's Cow series has become one of the Pop Art founder's most iconic and instantly recognisable editions. Now, for the first time in history, the graphic has been meticulously recreated using the original acetate by the London-based artist Paul Stephenson, whose After Warhol collection saw his work dubbed 'posthumous Warhols' by the late Warholian expert Rainer Crone. As featured by the BBC and VICE magazine, Paul's groundbreaking project has seen him transform Warhol's original acetates - including those used for 'Jackie', 'Mao', 'Little Electric Chair' and 'Self Portrait' - for an exclusive collection of limited edition prints. His latest release, inspired by Warhol's seminal Cow series (1966-76), includes four psychedelic colourways, each of which has been expertly printed as silkscreens on paper and framed by hand. Each artwork also features a window on the reverse so the stamps - including 'UNDENIED' in homage to the Andy Warhol Art Authentication Board's collapse in 2012 - can be seen. Originally printed on wallpaper, the Cow series subverted the timelessness of the pastoral subject, allowing Warhol to wryly comment on the use of fine art as wallpaper in people’s homes. Paul explains: “It’s a typical, mischievous Warhol idea: taking something ‘fine art’ and making it something that’s just a background, but actually also an incredible, iconic Pop image.”

Bringing Andy Warhol's work to life | 2020

One of the things we love at Castle Fine Art is a fantastic story behind a collection. And it may be hard to top that of London-based artist Paul Stephenson, whose After Warhol collection has seen him dedicate over a decade to rendering the methodology of Andy Warhol using his original acetates. Described as 'posthumous Warhols' by the world's foremost Warhol expert, Professor Rainer Crone, the works ask important questions about the authorship of art. Paul's new medium of silkscreens on paper is in keeping with the Pop Art founder's philosophy (and our own!) that art shouldn't just be for the elite. Paul adds: "Warhol wanted his art to be accessible so everyone could own or enjoy it. An art gallery on the high street selling Warhols in 2020 is pure Warhol." We're exhibiting numerous works by Paul throughout our Bath, Brighton, Manchester, Liverpool, Mailbox, St Christopher's Place, Cardiff and Newcastle galleries. After Warhol | 2020

Rarely has such a faithful rendering of an artist’s methodology been established with the rigour and diligence that we see in the After Warhol collection. London-based Paul Stephenson’s odyssey into the world of Warhol began in 2010, when he purchased a collection of the artist’s original acetates. His ensuing body of work – created in collaboration with one of Warhol’s original master printers, Alexander Heinrici – has been lauded by the BBC and VICE Magazine, and was recently showcased at successful events at selected galleries nationwide. Here we introduce you to Paul's artistic process and the two men who helped to bring this groundbreaking collection to life.

Introducing Paul Stephenson | 2019

More than 30 years after Andy Warhol’s death in 1987, his art continues to be reproduced around the world. But one artist is taking this to a new level: London-based Paul Stephenson, who after acquiring the original acetates has produced what experts have termed ‘authentic Warhol paintings’. In collaboration with Warhol’s original screenprinter, Alexander Heinrici, Paul has reproduced four of the Pop Art founder’s most iconic artworks for his new collection, After Warhol. His drive for authenticity led him to source the same materials and follow Warhol’s technique exactly, creating ‘posthumous Warhols’ akin to those currently on display at the Andy Warhol Museum. Paul’s 10-year project has been featured by the BBC and VICE Magazine, with leading Warhol expert Rainer Crone stating that the works should be considered amongst those created by the artist himself.

After Warhol | 2019

At the heart of Paul Stephenson's After Warhol collection lies an incredible story. It's a tale that traces his journey from a chance discovery a decade ago to working with Andy Warhol's master printer in New York. Created using Warhol's original acetates and techniques in collaboration with the artist's original screen printer, the hand-pulled silkscreens feature four of the most iconic images of the 20th century. Following his successful debut UK tour, After Warhol is now available to buy online and in galleries nationwide. Catch the first instalment of our behind-the-scenes video series below.

The artist

Paul Stephenson

Researching and recreating the practices first established by Andy Warhol, London-based artist Paul has dedicated the last decade to creating After Warhol. Created using the Pop Art founder's original acetate, the artist recreates Warhol's iconic Cow series.

"These one-off/unique colourways came about quite organically as part of following Andy Warhol's process. He experimented with making multiple 'colourways', he talked about people getting a Warhol that would match the drapes/curtains. Making unique one-off colours felt like a natural progression of that Warholian idea."

'The process for making these unique colour involves hand painting the background colours. Even using the same pigments and same brand of paint that Warhol used. The end result is exactly what you would see on a Warhol painting hanging in the Tate retrospective right now.'
