Released as part of Boy George’s debut collection with Castle Fine Art, ‘Colour by Numbers’ is an intriguing self-portrait of creative visionary, Boy George.
Inspired by Culture Club’s 1983 studio album of the same name, ‘Colour by Numbers’ is based on a familiar image of Boy George from that era. On seeing a picture of himself, Boy George recalled regularly feeling ‘grumpy’ around that time, as he was still navigating the early years of fame.
In the self-portrait, he has given the image a more playful perspective, reclaiming this persona as a cartoon. It sees him reflect on who he was then, who he is now and the version of himself that the public know. “I was an invention, so it's easy to draw that person because it's so set in stone”, he says.
The subjects featured in this limited-edition collection are some of the most pictured figures of the last 50 years; David Bowie, Madonna, Prince, Boy George. But what makes Boy George’s interpretation of them unique is perspective. We’re seeing his vision of these icons from the eras that speak to him, helping us understand him at individual points in time.

For all orders of artwork, we advise delivery of up to four weeks from placing your order. Many of our pieces are handmade to order just for you here in the UK. Books and gift vouchers are delivered within 2-3 working days.
Please note that if multiple artworks are purchased within the same order, they may be delivered separately for efficient delivery.
We want you to love your artwork, so we offer a 14-day cooling-off period to view it in your home. If you’re not satisfied, we’ll collect it for free or you can return it to one of our galleries.
For orders outside of the UK, the same applies - please contact us and we can arrange collection of the artwork.

Hand-signed by the artist
The artwork is hand-signed by Boy George.
Multi-step Production process.
Firstly, depending on the prints requirements, an initial print pass using archival pigments is used to map out the design (this has been used on “Colour By Numbers” and “Purple Reign” which then have silkscreen overlays). Two of the works, “Madame X” and “Yamamoto” are predominantly silkscreen. Next, sections are picked out using “glitter gloss”; a process which involves screening inks containing fine glitter suspended within. Further embellishment is then added to finish the works; this being a silkscreen varnish to pick out George’s black line work and silver leaf (silver leaf is used on “Madame X” and “Purple Reign)

Yes, Castle Fine Art is based in the UK, but we ship internationally. All of our international orders are delivered via DHL.
To ensure a secure transit, every artwork is handled with utmost care. We take precautionary measures by using foam around the piece for added safety during transportation, and then the artwork(s) are packaged in double-walled, reinforced cardboard boxes that offer superior protection. All of this ensures that your artwork arrives safely.
Most artwork orders will need to be professionally mounted and framed before being dispatched, so delivery can take up to four weeks from the date you placed your order, but we do strive to deliver your order as soon as we can.
Books and gift cards are delivered within 2-3 working days. Please note, if multiple artworks are purchased within the same order, they may be delivered separately for efficient delivery.
The majority of our originals and limited editions are hand signed by the artist themselves. On some occasions where we have limited edition sculptures, this is hand written into the mould before production. If you're unsure, please contact us.
