If you follow Scarlett Raven on social media, it will be no surprise that her painting can get very messy. Unlike using the conventional trusty paintbrush, Scarlett prefers to use her hands moving across the surface dragging oil paints around the canvas. By covering her hands in mechanics’ barrier cream, she is like an athlete preparing for a race – once moisturised and protected she is ready to run!
Visual movement is essential to achieve this, so she captures the movement in the application of paint. By building up colours and textures, Scarlett creates depth forming a backdrop. For the flowers in the foreground, Scarlett lathers the oils into her hands and drips the paint to form poppies and flowers – with no prediction of how each petal is going to fall, each finished piece is a surprise.
Would you like to see Scarlett’s work up close and brought to life? We have an exciting exhibition coming up in Newcastle where a selection of the beautiful originals from her popular collection, The Danger Tree. Engaging people all over the world, the ground-breaking augmented reality experience should not be missed!
"The movement must be in every layer, so when you step back you feel like the landscape is alive. It's the magic of knowing that something beautiful is about to happen."
