In his new collection The Art of Being Untamed, Hefferan explores individuality, experience and the many layers that shape who we are. Through vivid colour, layered symbolism and expressive mark-making, each figure becomes a kind of living archive, holding traces of memory, desire, vulnerability, strength and rebellion.
Combining realism with richly layered expressionist elements, Hefferan’s distinctive approach to the human figure continues to evolve. While the figures can be elegant, vulnerable or provocative, the artist’s refusal to be confined to a single visual identity is not a lack of direction; it is one of his greatest strengths.
‘Beauty You Can’t Handle’ portraits attraction, observation and resistance. Against a luminous turquoise ground, the figure’s guarded posture and sideways gaze create a subtle distance between subject and viewer.
Wings, circles and the fox introduce associations of instinct, movement and intelligence. The imagery gives the portrait a sense of freedom and unpredictability, while the title adds an element of challenge. What initially appears to be a straightforward portrait gradually becomes something more elusive.
Hefferan paints the noses in unexpected colours to interrupt conventional beauty and give each face its own emotional pulse. The nose sits at the centre of identity, and by transforming it, he reveals the energy beneath the surface—a reminder that individuality begins where perfection ends.
Rendered in watercolour, gouache and graphite pencil, and through vivid colour and layered symbols, each figure becomes a living archive of memory, desire, vulnerability and rebellion. Their direct gazes challenge the viewer: these are not passive portraits. Each figure occupies its own space, with a distinct sense of presence, character and autonomy. The artwork invites us to consider the tension between how we are seen and how we choose to see ourselves.

We offer a 14-day cooling-off period so you can view the artwork in your home. If it's not right for you, we’ll collect it free of charge or you can return it to one of our galleries.

Rob Hefferan (b. 1968, Cheshire, England) is a British figurative artist known for his distinctive approach to the human figure, combining accomplished realism with expressive, painterly treatments of atmosphere, colour and background.
At the heart of Hefferan’s work is an enduring fascination with the human figure, not simply as a subject of beauty, but as a vessel for personality, emotion, strength and hidden stories. His paintings invite the viewer to look beyond the surface, capturing something of the character, presence and individuality of each subject.

Yes, Castle Fine Art is based in the UK, but we ship internationally. All of our international orders are delivered via DHL.
To ensure a secure transit, every artwork is handled with utmost care. We take precautionary measures by using foam around the piece for added safety during transportation, and then the artwork(s) are packaged in double-walled, reinforced cardboard boxes that offer superior protection. All of this ensures that your artwork arrives safely.
Most artwork orders will need to be professionally mounted and framed before being dispatched, so delivery can take up to four weeks from the date you placed your order, but we do strive to deliver your order as soon as we can.
Books and gift cards are delivered within 2-3 working days. Please note, if multiple artworks are purchased within the same order, they may be delivered separately for efficient delivery.
The majority of our originals and limited editions are hand signed by the artist themselves. On some occasions where we have limited edition sculptures, this is hand written into the mould before production. If you're unsure, please contact us.
