The artist

David Gerstein

Trained in Israel, Paris, New York and at Saint Martin's School of Art in London, Gerstein began as a figurative painter before moving beyond the flat canvas. In 1995 he pioneered his signature form: hand-painted, precision-cut aluminium wall sculptures. Sheets of aluminium are laser-cut, layered into multi-plane compositions and finished in high-gloss colour—citrus yellows, electric blues, saturated reds—each piece retaining the gestural energy of the artist's hand. Alongside his hand-painted paper cut-outs, these works occupy a hybrid space between painting and sculpture, shifting subtly as the viewer moves and creating a kinetic sense of animation.

His subject matter unfolds across three core themes. In Rhythm of Life, Gerstein captures ordinary people suspended in optimistic moments—commuting, cycling, strolling or rushing through the city—rendered in vibrant colour to form a snapshot of contemporary reality, alive with energy and freedom. In The Beauty of Nature, butterflies, florals and aquatic life are depicted in explosive colour and layered intricacy, evoking the delicate chaos and intensity of the natural world while bringing warmth and vitality into space. In The Joy of Leisure, Gerstein celebrates the artefacts of modern pleasure—from music and nightlife to fashion and iconic cars—elevating the everyday through a lens of exuberance and play.

At the heart of Gerstein's philosophy is a desire to enrich the spaces people inhabit. Art, lived with day-to-day, should provide enduring visual pleasure—colour, movement, humour and vitality. Whether encountered on a collector's wall or within a public square, his sculptures are designed to bring energy and optimism into everyday life.

David Gerstein is an internationally renowned artist whose distinctive practice sits at the intersection of figurative art and pop art. Working out of Umbria, Italy, Gerstein has built a globally celebrated career defined by vibrant colour, movement and an unmistakable sense of joy. His work is guided by what he calls “The Joy of Life”—a philosophy captured in his words: “My art mostly deals with the joys and pleasures of life. I want my works to pass along the feeling of exuberance and delight.”

Trained in Israel, Paris, New York and at Saint Martin’s School of Art in London, Gerstein began his career as a figurative painter before pushing beyond the confines of the canvas. In 1995, he pioneered his signature medium: hand-painted cut-out aluminium wall sculptures. Alongside his hand-painted paper cut-outs, these works form a unique hybrid of painting and sculpture. Precision-cut aluminium is layered into dynamic compositions and finished in bold, high-gloss colour, each piece retaining the immediacy and character of the artist’s hand.

Gerstein’s visual language is rooted in movement, rhythm and depth. Through layered construction, his compositions shift as the viewer moves, creating a sense of animation and life. This kinetic quality reflects his enduring interest in capturing the energy of the world around us—transforming everyday scenes into vivid, immersive experiences.

Gerstein’s practice is shaped by a lineage of artists who champion colour, narrative and the emotional resonance of everyday life. He acknowledges the influence of David Hockney’s bold, figurative storytelling and Henri Matisse’s enduring belief that art should offer comfort and pleasure—“like sitting in a good armchair.” These sensibilities are woven into his own visual language, where vivid colour and dynamic composition become vehicles for both expression and experience.

While his work reflects an awareness of urban pressure, political context and consumer culture, it resists cynicism. Instead, Gerstein seeks to “shine a light” on contemporary life, balancing observation with optimism.

At the heart of this approach is a desire to enrich the environments people inhabit. Gerstein believes that art, lived with day-to-day, should provide enduring visual pleasure—infusing spaces with colour, movement, humour and a palpable sense of vitality. Whether encountered on a domestic wall or within a public setting, his works are designed to bring energy, optimism and a lasting sense of joy.

Over the course of his career, Gerstein has achieved remarkable international reach. He has created over 250 outdoor public sculptures installed worldwide, held more than 300 solo exhibitions, and participated in over 400 group exhibitions across museums, leading galleries and international art fairs. His work has also been the subject of more than ten published books, further cementing his position as a major figure in contemporary art.

At its core, Gerstein’s work extends painting beyond the canvas into space and life itself. Balancing the accessibility of pop art with the discipline of figuration, his practice creates a world of bold colour, dynamic movement and enduring positivity—an invitation to experience the vibrancy, energy and joy of life.
