An exhibition at Madrid’s Prado Museum takes a very different view of art – from the back! On the Reverse features works by van Gogh, Goya, Bronzino, Magritte and Rembrandt, all hung so the viewer can see the backs of the works which reveal untold stories about the works, Curator Miguel Ángel Blanco was inspired to make the show by Diego Velázquez’s masterpiece Las Meninas, which shows an artist painting the Spanish Royal family, and shows the reverse of the artist’s canvas. The rear of the paintings in the exhibition reveal artist’s sketches, seals, evidence of the provenance of the work – and some contain whole other paintings.
London’s Imperial War Museum has just opened its new Blavatnik Art, Film and Photography Galleries, which provide a vivid account of modern war. Showcasing the experiences and innovations of artists, filmmakers and photographers, these galleries explore the complex tension between creativity and destruction. Amongst the 500 pieces on display are John Singer Sargent’s study of World War I trenches Gassed, which has undergone major conservation work, as well as the work of contemporary war artists.
An exhibition highlighting the artistic brilliance of Paris at the beginning of the 20th century has opened at the city’s Le Petit Palais museum. Modern Paris features 380 works, ranging from corset-less dresses by designer Paul Poiret and Cartier jewellery to artworks by Picasso, Duchamp and Tamara de Lempicka.
