This week's art news

A work by American artist Bob Ross, famous for his popular art show 'The Joy of Painting', in which he would paint a full landscape in a 30-minute programme, has gone on sale in the US. ‘A Walk in the Woods’ (1983) was created by Ross in the first of the iconic series, and gallery Modern Artifacts has put a price on it of over $9 million. They have said they don’t think it will reach that price, but will take offers; they are also taking the piece on tour.

Danish artist Jens Haaning has been ordered by a court to repay the Kunsten Museum of Modern Art in Aalborg the equivalent of over £66,000 after it lent him money and in return, he submitted empty frames as his works of art. Hanning is a conceptual artist whose work focuses on power and inequality, and the museum had asked him to recreate two earlier works which used banknotes to illustrate the average Danish income; instead he provided them with two empty frames called ‘Take the Money and Run’.

A new exhibition of the work of Dutch artist Frans Hals will open at the National Gallery on 30 September. Some 50 of Hals’s finest works will be brought together, including the exceptional, first-ever loan of his most famous picture, ‘The Laughing Cavalier’ (1624), from the Wallace Collection. Hals work still bursts with life and humour today, and is one of the must-see London exhibitions for the autumn.
