An original oil painting by Scarlett Raven.

One of the most exciting female artists in the UK today, Scarlett Raven’s textured landscape originals are standout pieces in any collection. Bursting with bright colour and incredible texture, this beautiful original artwork not only showcases her own signature style but, also the art historical genre of impasto painting.

In “Where The Daffodils Sing” the artist features some of her more characteristic elements. The white cottage, the yellow flowers and the green fields are commonly used elements by Raven, who deconstructs countryside landscape through bright colours and the use of texture. The artist’s unique portrayal of the sky in circular textured brush strokes adds a beautiful depth to the piece. Similar to Van Gogh’s skies, Raven’s skies are fluid expressing the emotion behind the textured swirls.

Working with oil paints and acrylics, Scarlett adds splatters and daubs of paint to replicate the abundance of textures found outdoors. With stylistic influences from Anselm Kiefer, Gustav Klimt and David Hockney, her emotive works are inspired by her personal connection with nature. Scarlett describes creating a safe haven within her landscapes, made-up of several layers, floral foreground, expansive mid-ground, and an intense skyline background that the viewer can almost step inside of and feel the calming, exhilarating or cathartic qualities of nature for themselves, allowing viewers to step inside, take a deep breath and feel the grounding and awe-inspiring influence of nature for themselves. They create an escape, a safe place for viewers to feel whatever range of emotions nature and are inspire for them.

Scarlett's incredible process lends itself to impasto painting, invented in the 17th century by Baroque painters and later mastered by artists like Vincent Van Gogh. This process is characterised by applying paint in thick layers so that it is elevated from the surface of the canvas. The result is powerful representations of texture and light which can be seen in such major historical artworks as Van Gogh's 'Starry Night' and Lucian Freud's 'Reflection (Self-Portrait)'. The impressionist and expressionist painter can take months to complete one painting due to layering and drying time.

This incredible original artwork by Scarlett can be displayed in a range of spaces and will make a gorgeous centrepiece to any wall. Find out more about this collection, Safe Space, or alternatively shop her art.
