Billy Connolly’s fascination with wild animals can be observed throughout his career – perhaps most famously in his iconic ‘Wildebeest’ comedy sketch. Packed with physical humour and Billy’s signature wit, the sketch explores the vacantness of the wildebeest whilst the lions plan their attack. ‘Silence in the Undergrowth Is Key’ centres upon the predator in the story, a big cat.
Part of his Born on a Rainy Day - Early Drawings collection, Billy rediscovered this work while sorting through a cupboard in his house in Gozo, Malta. The shapes used in this drawing are reminiscent of the ‘islands’ that are so prevalent in Billy’s more current work.
This artwork is a Double Hit Flatbed Giclée limited edition on 100% Cotton Saunders Waterford 300gsm Paper and it's available in a set. Receive an exclusive limited-edition print when purchasing the Born on a Rainy Day – Early Drawings Collection set.

Double Hit Flatbed Giclée limited edition artwork
Given Castle Fine Art's expertise as UK's leading art retailer, we are committed to the highest standards specially regarding printing. Derived from the French term gicler’, the term describes a printing process whereby microscopic dots of pigment-based ink are sprayed onto archival-quality paper to ensure the fidelity of a limited edition to an original artwork. It is believed that a giclée will significantly outlast a lithographic print, keeping its vivid colour for up to 200 years.

The artist
Billy Connolly
The world-famous musician and comedian's iconic artworks have no less impact than one of his legendary comedy sketches. The faceless figures possess an extraordinary self-awareness and humanity. Devoid of emotion or expression, their anonymity opens them up to individual interpretation, creating a unique bond with the viewer.
Featured by The Times and documentaries including Billy Connolly: It's Been a Pleasure, his minimalist drawings have been described as 'poignant', 'funny' and 'enigmatic' by critics.
