Untold Stories | 2025

James McQueen

By rewriting the narrative, reclaiming the margins and stripping away what doesn’t belong, James McQueen examines what remains when we take control of the final draft and reject the expected. Cool, unapologetic and fiercely self-authored, this is storytelling on the artist’s terms. Anonymous as he may be, the voice is unmistakable.

Each piece plays on cultural tropes, the raw truth of reality and the fantasy of freedom, giving voice to boundaries that often go unspoken.

The artist’s affection for classic paperbacks – particularly those worn with love – resonates throughout the collection, interwoven with familiar motifs from contemporary art. From Damien Hirst’s clinical dots to Jackson Pollock’s chaotic gestures, each piece transforms a familiar aesthetic into a statement of resistance, self-definition or sharp humour.

"I want to create that wear and tear, that authenticity. It’s too easy to do something clean. It’s too easy to do something with straight lines. It’s much harder to make something look old and tired."

The artist

James McQueen

You should never judge a book by its cover, and McQueen is keeping his firmly under wraps. The elusive artist, who operates under a name as fictitious as the titles he paints, has so far launched one collection of his book-themed Anthology works, three collections of his Non-Fiction works with Castle Fine Art and, the most recent Special Edition collection. They proved to be a page-turner with our collectors, and McQueen's limited edition captivating works are extraordinarily popular and in incredibly high demand - with the Non-Fiction collection selling out in just hours!
