The ‘raised fist’ has been a symbol of resistance, solidarity, and power since Honoré Daumier's 1848 painting, ‘The Uprising’. In it, workers protest for change, with one figure in the foreground emphatically raising their fist in the air.
This punchy sculpture from Whatshisname depicts a raised fist tightly gripping a banana, a familiar icon throughout art history. Often referenced by artists such as Andy Warhol and most recently by the Italian artist Maurizio Cattelan, whose banana attached to a gallery wall with duct tape sold for $5.2m at Sotheby’s New York, the use of fruit within the context of modern art can be reflective of different reasons but it’s often portrayed as a symbol of what’s both mundane and proactive.
A paradoxical portrayal, it is both strong and fragile, elegant and stocky, shiny and plain, cartoonish and realistic. The banana is displayed in a reflective, metallic gold finish, creating a stark contrast with the matte hand.
The ‘fist of rebellion’, as he refers to it, has appeared in Whatshisname’s work for many years, beginning as a motif in his first Gone series in 2017. Now an artwork in its own right, the porcelain sculpture was two years in production.
Porcelain is a tricky material for artists to work with because it’s delicate, dries quickly and requires moisture while you work with it. Whatshisname spent several attempts getting the fist to wrist ratio just right.

For all orders of artwork, we advise delivery of up to four weeks from placing your order. Many of our pieces are handmade to order just for you here in the UK. Books and gift vouchers are delivered within 2-3 working days.
Please note that if multiple artworks are purchased within the same order, they may be delivered separately for efficient delivery.
We want you to love your artwork, so we offer a 14-day cooling-off period to view it in your home. If you’re not satisfied, we’ll collect it for free or you can return it to one of our galleries.
For orders outside of the UK, the same applies - please contact us and we can arrange collection of the artwork.

Yes, Castle Fine Art is based in the UK, but we ship internationally. All of our international orders are delivered via DHL.
To ensure a secure transit, every artwork is handled with utmost care. We take precautionary measures by using foam around the piece for added safety during transportation, and then the artwork(s) are packaged in double-walled, reinforced cardboard boxes that offer superior protection. All of this ensures that your artwork arrives safely.
Most artwork orders will need to be professionally mounted and framed before being dispatched, so delivery can take up to four weeks from the date you placed your order, but we do strive to deliver your order as soon as we can.
Books and gift cards are delivered within 2-3 working days. Please note, if multiple artworks are purchased within the same order, they may be delivered separately for efficient delivery.
The majority of our originals and limited editions are hand signed by the artist themselves. On some occasions where we have limited edition sculptures, this is hand written into the mould before production. If you're unsure, please contact us.
