A tribute to two decades of artistic innovation and a powerful exploration of landscape as a metaphor for growth, resilience and transformation, Rowan invites us not only to contemplate the landscape before us, but to embrace the journey ahead, and the boundless possibility that lies just beyond view.
Inspired by journeys driving through Scotland with his family, particularly the dramatic landscapes en route to the Isle of Skye, Rowan captures the stillness of forest paths and the commanding presence of mountain peaks. The composition is intentionally directional, guiding the eye upward into the sky, where the greatest transformation unfolds.
While the path mirrors the rhythm of life itself: constant progression, quiet determination and the pull of something just beyond reach, Beyond The Horizon speaks to anticipation and aspiration – it’s a meditation on change, perseverance and wonder, all encountered along a single path.
Working with such technical mastery and continual reinvention; Rowan remains at the forefront of his field, advancing a method that is entirely his own.
The landscape foreground, originally painted by Rowan, is recreated using a reverse giclée printing technique, meticulously applied in layers to low-iron tempered glass. Working directly onto the reverse of the printed glass, Rowan hand-paints every sky in oil. In this exacting process, highlights and the finest details are laid down first, followed by successive layers that build atmosphere, depth and luminosity. It is a method that demands extraordinary foresight and control — every mark considered, every layer intentional.

For all orders of artwork, we advise delivery of up to four weeks from placing your order. Many of our pieces are handmade to order just for you here in the UK. Books and gift vouchers are delivered within 2-3 working days.
Please note that if multiple artworks are purchased within the same order, they may be delivered separately for efficient delivery.
We want you to love your artwork, so we offer a 14-day cooling-off period to view it in your home. If you’re not satisfied, we’ll collect it for free or you can return it to one of our galleries.

Unique Artwork
Produced as a premium giclée, Rowan’s silhouetted foreground has been reverse-printed onto glass in layers, perfectly reflecting the incredible techniques used in his original artwork. In his London studio, Rowan then meticulously hand-painted each vista using his reverse painted layering technique. These unique artworks blend giclée-printed foregrounds with individually hand-painted backgrounds. The result is a stunning artwork characteristic of an original piece with an extra level of dimension. This type of artwork is perfect for those who want something individually finished and distinctive.

On each of Richard Rowan’s Unique and original artworks is a transparent viewing panel to allow collectors to see the incredible reverse painting process behind their creation. Rowan is the founder of his ‘reverse painting’ on glass medium and a true pioneer of his artistic endeavours. Beginning with the foreground and adding detail in layers, this technique requires great concentration and skill. By using glass as a canvas for his paintings, Richard creates a much smoother gradient of colour and a broader spectrum of shades.

Richard Rowan
From the Icelandic wilderness to the fiery horizons of Thailand and towering mountains of Norway to spectacular Scotland, his atmospheric scenes allow viewers to escape from everyday life, creating a sense of intrigue in any living space. Richard is the only artist to be creating art in this style, and his incredible landscapes are so detailed that they are often mistaken for photographs, when in fact each one has been meticulously painted by hand using his reverse painting technique.
As the only fine artist successfully creating artworks in this style, Richard has become a part of the history of the glass art form, which dates back to Roman times and can also be seen in the Gothic period. Unlike canvas, glass interacts with the light, bringing his works to sparkling life.

Yes, Castle Fine Art is based in the UK, but we ship internationally. All of our international orders are delivered via DHL.
To ensure a secure transit, every artwork is handled with utmost care. We take precautionary measures by using foam around the piece for added safety during transportation, and then the artwork(s) are packaged in double-walled, reinforced cardboard boxes that offer superior protection. All of this ensures that your artwork arrives safely.
Most artwork orders will need to be professionally mounted and framed before being dispatched, so delivery can take up to four weeks from the date you placed your order, but we do strive to deliver your order as soon as we can.
Books and gift cards are delivered within 2-3 working days. Please note, if multiple artworks are purchased within the same order, they may be delivered separately for efficient delivery.
The majority of our originals and limited editions are hand signed by the artist themselves. On some occasions where we have limited edition sculptures, this is hand written into the mould before production. If you're unsure, please contact us.
