Set of Two (Breathe In, Breathe Out & World Means You)

This calming set of two giclée prints on glass was created during UK lockdown and their unique, monochromatic colour palette take inspiration from the artist's sense of self-reflection during this time. The effect of the smooth black paint on glass is a mirror-like reflection that also does not take away from the depth and detail of the pieces.

The trees in the first artwork entitled 'Breathe In, Breathe Out', symbolise nature's lungs and the soft clouds behind is like the sensation of slowly filling your own lungs with air. In contrast the detailed mountain in 'World Means You' represents power and ambition Richard Rowan's want to travel, climb and explore.

Using a selection of ingenious techniques to create his intricate and atmospheric artworks, Richard first selects a piece of music which he associates with a particular time and place. He then replays this music while he paints to evoke the surroundings and emotions he felt in the original landscape. At the same time, Richard uses his own revered technique of reverse painting onto glass. Starting with the foreground before painting backwards until all he can see is the vague strokes of his background, the artist is able to capture the minute details of stars against a raw backdrop of richly coloured skies; preserved within the layers of paint on glass.
