Calling upon realist and impressionist artists of the 20th Century as well as his childhood in 1950s Yorkshire for inspiration, Nigel Mason uses the traditional medium of oil paint to render his subjects in ethereal light and thus capture the elegance of dancers.
The painter – who attained a fine art degree in his 50s – depicts a variety of nostalgic tableaus, beach scenes and figurative works such as this one. His influences include Walker Sickert, Edouard Vuillard and Edgar Degas, with Nigel considering his work a form of social realism.
“I’d describe it as small narrative vignettes -or painting versions of film stills – which capture intimate moments in time and observations of life, from the mundane to the profound.”
