Named after the real-life Mexican rancher who became a folk hero in Mexico and the USA, 'Legend of Gregorio Cortez' by Billy Schenck also draws inspiration from the 1982 Hollywood adaptation that has captivated the renowned contemporary artist for many years.
On creating this beautiful piece, Billy writes: “Gregorio Cortez is a hero to me. I strongly identify with outlaws, having been one myself many years ago. There’s an old rock ‘n’ roll song performed by the Bobby Fuller Four called ‘I Fought the Law’ (1966), and I have always identified with that song too.”
Displayed on high quality 300gsm paper via silkscreen printing techniques to preserve the rich colour and texture of Billy's original painting, this striking artwork also features bold, contrasting shades of fiery orange and deep blue offset by striking silhouettes associated with the wild west; both cinematic and historical.
