The world-famous musician and comedian’s iconic artworks have no less impact than one of his legendary comedy sketches, with his humour communicated through shapes and lines rather than words. Billy’s art is charmingly simplistic, his faceless figures possess an extraordinary self-awareness and humanity. Devoid of emotion or expression, their anonymity opens them up to individual interpretation, creating a unique bond with the viewer. Billy's initial works were in black and white, but in recent years, he has embraced colour, adding: “There’s more colour in the collection than before. I was looking at the drawings and sometimes they were crying out for colour and I didn’t know why.”
This is Billy’s tribute to the Scottish wildcat. “They're a wild animal, not a pussycat. I had a stuffed one, given to me by a man whose wife wouldn’t let him keep it in the house. I put him by the fireplace in the living room. Robin Williams was staying with us and started pretending to be the Wildcat, talking in a Scottish accent and really getting into character. Someone came into the room and said: ‘What’s that?’, and Robin made the exact noise of the cat and scared the life out of them. Robin was a genius.”
In his unmistakeable style, Connolly reflects both his Scottish background and his current life in Florida, where he creates these fantastic pieces. With the comic’s brilliant sense of humour, this collection will resonate even more deeply with collectors given the personal sentiment of this release – the artworks see Connolly recalling his Glasgow childhood, living in the Scottish countryside and a bit of Scots history alongside an insight into his favourite hobby, fishing, as practiced near his Florida home.
Hand-signed by The Big Yin himself, ‘Extinct Scottish Cat’ will add a bold and humorous touch of musical and comedic history to your home. This piece is a Double Hit Flatbed Giclée Print on 100% Cotton Aquarelle Arches - Torchon 300gsm displayed on 2mm Float Glass.
This piece can also be purchased as part of an unframed or framed set.
