Art Consultation
Placed in their own little universes, Nic's tiny characters offer viewers an intimacy akin to peering through the windows into a stranger’s life. But within that glimpse, we can recognise ourselves.
This piece uses hand-cut and painted letters, real Viagra, hand-painted and finished money, and a large pile of carved and sculpted ‘cocaine’. The cocaine takes days to complete and uses seven different types of dust, from stone to powdered glass.
Nic adds: “When Ian Drury – a singer and songwriter – first coined the phrase 'Sex, drugs & rock 'n' roll' in 1977, he had no idea what it would become. It is a phrase that suggests hedonism and living to the max, and this is how many people see it. But it is also about never compromising on life. Live your own way, live on the edge and take more from life than a simple 9-to-5 existence. This is one of my favourite editions to date.”

The artist
Nic Joly
What began as Nic Joly's hobby has transformed into a passion for sculpting minute depictions of everyday life. The British artist's 3D wall sculptures tackle topics like love, sex, mental health and war in a touching and humorous way.
In 2024, we celebrated Nic Joly's tenth anniversary with Castle Fine Art and remembered the intricate details tell stories of moments lived, emotions felt, and a journey embarked upon. As Nic reflects on the last decade and his past creations, the spirit of experimentation and the passion for self-expression is a reminder that Nic's artwork is an extension of him and the thoughtful, considered miniature works he creates. Nic's 2024 collection,The Next Chapter, references Nic's evolving creative journey with his progressive techniques, unexplored themes, and sentiments yet to be unravelled and miniaturised. With renewed determination, Nic is ready to embark on The Next Chapter of his artistic journey.
