After stepping away from the limelight in the early 1970s, Gill re-emerged triumphantly in the 1990s, and is now back with huge success with both private collectors and galleries. His unique take on iconic imagery has been re-discovered and its place in art history re-affirmed. Described as a pioneer in the pop art movement, Gill’s works are visionary, timeless and universal. His iconic vibrant separations of light and shadow – typic of news photographs - are inspired by magazines like Time, Life and National Geographic and have been featured in numerous galleries. One of Pop Art’s hallmarks is its obsession with popular culture, and Gill’s Women in Cars series is firmly rooted in this. He began making the works in the 1960’s, when American magazines LIFE and TIME began printing paparazzi shots of film stars getting out of their cars. Women in Cars could offer something the magazines couldn’t – colour – and when the pieces began appearing in galleries, they were the epitome of cool modernity, and gave the public a chance to see celebrity in a new light. One of the earliest versions of the series, ‘Laughing Woman in car and Close Up’ was purchased by and exhibited in MoMa between works by Picasso and Odilon Redon. In the years 2020 to 2022, almost sixty years after his first works, at the age of over 85 years, acrylic paintings and studies are created which show the “Women In Cars” manifested in all their colourfulness and timeless presence. These acrylic originals and studies are modern embodiments of an idea that was ahead of its time, anticipating the omnipresence of social media and the struggle to protect a personal and private space of existing. These modern pieces are steeped in the history of the pop art movement and bring a fresh and exciting insight into the workings of one of the last living pioneers of the subject. Utilising the colourist style of overlaying montage imagery, in “Loved By Illusion”, Gill combines pop art with an old-school Hollywood feel. The dark shade of purple blue, the green and the orange create a visual interesting piece. This piece is a bolder coloured, more angular study in a collage, montage image style. Structurally placed together, the car colour is accentuated by the model’s orange hair and coat creating a beautiful game of contrasting bold colours. This iconic original is a statement piece in every collection!

Castle Fine Art is delighted to announce a new collection of works, Women in Cars, by the American Pop Art pioneer James Francis Gill. At the forefront of the Pop Art movement, in 1962 Gill’s artworks caught the eye of renowned art dealer Felix Landau known for bringing the artworks of Francis Bacon and Egon Schiele to the USA. Within a matter of weeks Gill’s famous ‘Marilyn Triptych’, only the second fine art portrait of the icon to be painted, was purchased, and exhibited by New York’s Museum of Modern Art.

When Pop Art exploded in the USA in the 1960s, the art world changed forever. At the forefront of the movement was James Francis Gill, a Texas-born architectural designer who would go on to count Roy Lichtenstein, Robert Indiana, and Andy Warhol amongst his peers. Famously, he stepped away from his celebrity in the early 1970s (although continued painting), but the Pop Art pioneer was rediscovered in the 1990s, and was warmly received by both galleries and private collectors.

Yes, Castle Fine Art is based in the UK, but we ship internationally. All of our international orders are delivered via DHL.
To ensure a secure transit, every artwork is handled with utmost care. We take precautionary measures by using foam around the piece for added safety during transportation, and then the artwork(s) are packaged in double-walled, reinforced cardboard boxes that offer superior protection. All of this ensures that your artwork arrives safely.
Most artwork orders will need to be professionally mounted and framed before being dispatched, so delivery can take up to four weeks from the date you placed your order, but we do strive to deliver your order as soon as we can.
Books and gift cards are delivered within 2-3 working days. Please note, if multiple artworks are purchased within the same order, they may be delivered separately for efficient delivery.
The majority of our originals and limited editions are hand signed by the artist themselves. On some occasions where we have limited edition sculptures, this is hand written into the mould before production. If you're unsure, please contact us.
