The Artist
David Gerstein
With more than 250 public sculptures installed across five continents, internationally renowned artist David Gerstein has brought colour and movement to streetscapes from Tel Aviv to Tokyo. Known for their energetic rhythm and movement his bold aluminium forms have become landmarks in their own right. Across a career spanning over four decades, Gerstein has held over 300 solo exhibitions and been the subject of more than ten published books, making him one of the most widely shown figurative artists working today. Based in Umbria, Italy, his practice is driven by a single conviction: art should bring joy.
"My art mostly deals with the joys of life. I want my works to pass along the feeling of exuberance and delight."
The artist
David Gerstein
Trained in Israel, Paris, New York and at Saint Martin's School of Art in London, Gerstein began as a figurative painter before moving beyond the flat canvas. In 1995 he pioneered his signature form: hand-painted, precision-cut aluminium wall sculptures. Sheets of aluminium are laser-cut, layered into multi-plane compositions and finished in high-gloss colour—citrus yellows, electric blues, saturated reds—each piece retaining the gestural energy of the artist's hand. Alongside his hand-painted paper cut-outs, these works occupy a hybrid space between painting and sculpture, shifting subtly as the viewer moves and creating a kinetic sense of animation.
His subject matter unfolds across three core themes. In Rhythm of Life, Gerstein captures ordinary people suspended in optimistic moments—commuting, cycling, strolling or rushing through the city—rendered in vibrant colour to form a snapshot of contemporary reality, alive with energy and freedom. In The Beauty of Nature, butterflies, florals and aquatic life are depicted in explosive colour and layered intricacy, evoking the delicate chaos and intensity of the natural world while bringing warmth and vitality into space. In The Joy of Leisure, Gerstein celebrates the artefacts of modern pleasure—from music and nightlife to fashion and iconic cars—elevating the everyday through a lens of exuberance and play.
At the heart of Gerstein's philosophy is a desire to enrich the spaces people inhabit. Art, lived with day-to-day, should provide enduring visual pleasure—colour, movement, humour and vitality. Whether encountered on a collector's wall or within a public square, his sculptures are designed to bring energy and optimism into everyday life.
In 1995, we opened our first-ever gallery in Stratford-upon-Avon. With just one goal in mind - to make our art accessible to all - our fledgling company began to spread its roots.
