Steve Winterburn, the esteemed master of bronze casting, has unlocked the closely guarded secrets of foundrymen to perfect age-old techniques in mold-making and the manipulation of molten bronze.
In a breathtaking celebration of movement and form, sculpted by a Yorkshire-based artist, the essence of a hare is captured ‘Waiting for Spring’.
One of Britain’s most captivating and mysterious wild creatures, the life-size sculpture portrays the animal crouched low in a moment of stillness yet ready to spring at any moment, conveying its natural grace and alert energy.
Inspired by Winterburn’s deep connection with wildlife and the countryside, the artist has often encountered hares in their natural habitat surrounding his foundry. This dedication and patience allowed Steve to perfectly capture not only their physical form but also their contrasting spirit—an animal that is ever-alert but peaceful in perfect harmony.
Steve's artistry comes through in making the sculpture feel almost alive with the hare’s inquisitive expression and the finely detailed features – as if the animal might shift or twitch its ears at the slightest sound.
A testament to Winterburn’s mastery of bronze as a medium and his passion for wildlife, the sculptor’s ability to merge realism with movement has resulted in a unique creation.
In his own family-run foundry, Steve harnesses the timeless medium, bronze, which he reveres as 'eternal as diamonds'. Each step of the process is executed by hand at the foundry, from mold-making to finishing touches, ensuring the utmost authenticity and quality.
