In this signed original drawing by Nigel Humphries, we see one of the world's most iconic and notorious characters rendered in an extra-ordinarily magical way. In his signature style with ripped paper backgrounds and still life toys, Humphries creates another universes that appeal to our inner child and magically captures the imagination and nostalgia of childhood, bringing these feelings to life on canvas. The artist told us he wanted the collection to represent the main character’s journey from his early day at the school to his final battle with the main villain.
Depicting one the of the most beloved moments in the saga, “The Sorting Hat” represents the moment when the young wizard decides his fate regarding which house he will belong to, wearing the iconic sorting hat. With the house colours in the background, the big hat helps to reflect on the character’s young age and on how he was small amongst his older peers.
This is really capturing that same feeling of first day anxiety that every child experiences, the oversized blazer or shoes that are slightly too big, surrounded by older kids. It’s a really significant experience for every child and this scene really captures that with the small frame of Harry and large sorting hat – this following along from childhood to adulthood through schooldays in this fictional world is a universal feeling most can relate to.
“I wanted to portray his anxiety and hopefully the painting does that”.
Passionate about revolutionising the way we view still-life painting, the artist draws upon his childhood for inspiration. As a child, Nigel Humphries sketched dinosaurs and monsters, building upon his mediums of graphite, pencil, oil paint and more. Since then, his acclaimed collections of endearing miniature superheroes, sci-fi villains and iconic characters has brought to life some of the most popular characters of all time. By re-creating in still life, Nigel’s work evokes the feeling of childhood wonder and fun when playing with your own toys and of joy from these stories and quests.
