A reinterpretation of Lawrence Schiller’ 1936 portrait of Marilyn Monroe, Gill's adaptation thrives on its colour dramaturgy and atmospheric density as the warm, golden light on Monroe's skin contrasts with the cool, intense blue of the water.
The transitions between light and shadow on the skin are finely nuanced, the light reflections in the water masterfully set. Gill creates luminosity and transparency that lend the picture an almost supernatural effect.
Gill's Monroe is not an advertising figure, an icon of seduction nor a victiom of the media, but a human being - tangible, vulnerable and at the same time full of inner strength – a figure caught between splendour and fragility.
One of James Francis Gill’s most intimate and expressive series and part of a body of work dating back to the 1960s, Women in Water sees Gill present a series of female figures in a suspended, almost timeless state. Poised at the edge of movement, immersed in water, Gill captures the women between air and depth, hesitation and courage – each composition an encounter. These moments are charged with both physical vitality and emotional resonance. The leap into the water symbolizes transformation, rebirth, and the intensity of fleeting experiences. Gill distils this ephemeral feeling into a visual language that is at once personal, poetic, and universal.

James Francis Gill
When Pop Art exploded in the USA in the 1960s, the art world changed forever. At the forefront of the movement was James Francis Gill, a Texas-born architectural designer who would go on to count Roy Lichtenstein, Robert Indiana, and Andy Warhol amongst his peers. Famously, he stepped away from his celebrity in the early 1970s (although continued painting), but the Pop Art pioneer was rediscovered in the 1990s, and was warmly received by both galleries and private collectors.

Yes, Castle Fine Art is based in the UK, but we ship internationally. All of our international orders are delivered via DHL.
To ensure a secure transit, every artwork is handled with utmost care. We take precautionary measures by using foam around the piece for added safety during transportation, and then the artwork(s) are packaged in double-walled, reinforced cardboard boxes that offer superior protection. All of this ensures that your artwork arrives safely.
Most artwork orders will need to be professionally mounted and framed before being dispatched, so delivery can take up to four weeks from the date you placed your order, but we do strive to deliver your order as soon as we can.
Books and gift cards are delivered within 2-3 working days. Please note, if multiple artworks are purchased within the same order, they may be delivered separately for efficient delivery.
The majority of our originals and limited editions are hand signed by the artist themselves. On some occasions where we have limited edition sculptures, this is hand written into the mould before production. If you're unsure, please contact us.
