Pop Art pioneer James Francis Gill explores femininity through the shifting, fluid lens of water in this markedly intimate and expressive series. Transcending mere representation, this artwork is a personal and poetic exploration of emotion, identity and the universal human connection with nature.
Gill invites us to observe an intimately serene moment. Light refracts across the waves and colours merge and flow, as Gill creates distortions that are both photorealistic and atmospheric. The water becomes a veil, enhancing the female form’s radiance, making her feel tangible yet mysterious.
Framed as through seen from above, the woman is shown through a lens of vulnerability, liberation and quiet intensity. Gill paints his muse gently gliding through serene blue waters, luxuriating in tranquillity. As the dark tendrils of the woman’s hair float around her, they merge with the ripples in the water, blurring the boundary of where she ends and the water begins.
One of James Francis Gill’s most intimate and expressive series and part of a body of work dating back to the 1960s, Women in Water sees Gill present a series of female figures in a suspended, almost timeless state. Poised at the edge of movement, immersed in water, Gill captures the women between air and depth, hesitation and courage – each composition an encounter. These moments are charged with both physical vitality and emotional resonance. The leap into the water symbolizes transformation, rebirth, and the intensity of fleeting experiences. Gill distils this ephemeral feeling into a visual language that is at once personal, poetic, and universal.

James Francis Gill
When Pop Art exploded in the USA in the 1960s, the art world changed forever. At the forefront of the movement was James Francis Gill, a Texas-born architectural designer who would go on to count Roy Lichtenstein, Robert Indiana, and Andy Warhol amongst his peers. Famously, he stepped away from his celebrity in the early 1970s (although continued painting), but the Pop Art pioneer was rediscovered in the 1990s, and was warmly received by both galleries and private collectors.

Yes, Castle Fine Art is based in the UK, but we ship internationally. All of our international orders are delivered via DHL.
To ensure a secure transit, every artwork is handled with utmost care. We take precautionary measures by using foam around the piece for added safety during transportation, and then the artwork(s) are packaged in double-walled, reinforced cardboard boxes that offer superior protection. All of this ensures that your artwork arrives safely.
Most artwork orders will need to be professionally mounted and framed before being dispatched, so delivery can take up to four weeks from the date you placed your order, but we do strive to deliver your order as soon as we can.
Books and gift cards are delivered within 2-3 working days. Please note, if multiple artworks are purchased within the same order, they may be delivered separately for efficient delivery.
The majority of our originals and limited editions are hand signed by the artist themselves. On some occasions where we have limited edition sculptures, this is hand written into the mould before production. If you're unsure, please contact us.
