Amongst this universal symbolism, 'Afternoon Lilac' explores the transformative power of colour and the associations it carries. Personally titled by Depp, the artwork reimagines the blooms of the Yesterday’s Flowers series in shades of lilac and warm, buttery yellow. Traditionally associated with courtship, nostalgia, femininity and early love, lilac brings a particularly personal resonance to a collection whose origins lie in Depp’s tradition of painting flowers for those closest to him. In Victorian symbolism, lilac was also associated with remembrance and lost love, adding another layer of meaning to a work rooted in memory, connection and personal history.

The recurring yellow blooms emerge here in a softer, warmer hue, evoking the glow of an afternoon sky. Traditionally associated with friendship, joy, optimism and new beginnings, their colour introduces a sense of warmth and renewal.
