THE FINER DETAILS

Anaglyph Limited Edition

Anaglyph art is a stereoscopic visual art form in which two distinct colour ways, usually cyan and red, are used to create the illusion of a three-dimensional image. This technique became popular in mainstream media in the 1950s with cinema, comic books and visual effects being the most popular mediums. By separating the image into two coloured layers, the final image is a unique artwork. The process of creating an anaglyph involves several key steps in a meticulous process which include image separation, colour channel manipulation, alignment and depth adjustment. The key to fully experiencing anaglyph art is through anaglyph lenses. These lenses have complementary colours that filter the respective colour channel in the artwork. A set of colour filters is complimentary with the purchase of the artwork.

What’s an Anaglyph?

Painting two layered images onto a single canvas, Joseph employs the complex anaglyph technique to Beneath the Skin using red and blue channel separation to create a fractured, dimensional viewing experience. Traditionally associated with optical illusion and depth perception, the anaglyph process functions here as both a technical and conceptual device, forcing the viewer to navigate multiple visual realities at once. Joseph begins his anaglyph process digitally, carefully planning the intricate details of each artwork. While painting, he alternates between red and blue lenses to ensure the illusion of depth remains intact. Working with twelve precisely mixed colours, every brushstroke must be placed with absolute accuracy, anything less risks disrupting the transition effect and dimensional illusion.

Limited Edition Giclée

Given Castle Fine Art's expertise as the UK's leading art retailer, we are committed to the highest standards, especially regarding printing. Derived from the French term gicler’, the term describes a printing process whereby microscopic dots of pigment-based ink are sprayed onto archival-quality paper to ensure the fidelity of a limited edition to an original artwork. It is believed that a giclée will significantly outlast a lithographic print, keeping its vivid colour for up to 200 years.
