From the soft radiance of twilight to the monochromatic drama of a landscape suspended beneath an immense sky, the collection moves effortlessly between tranquillity and intensity.
In ‘Veil of the Infinite’, Rowan takes this fascination with scale and mystery to the far reaches of space. Inspired by the immense forms of a nebula, luminous passages of colour seem to burn from within a field of deep blue space, creating a mesmerising contrast between radiance and darkness. The effect is deliberately elusive: we appear to be witnessing something immense yet only glimpse a fragment of it. The title captures this beautifully: a veil conceals what lies beyond, leaving the infinite expanse of the scene tantalisingly out of reach. Rowan painted this artwork while listening to Cornfield Chase from Interstellar by Hans Zimmer.
Twenty years of artistic development have brought Rowan's reverse oil-on-glass technique to an extraordinary level of refinement. Working in carefully constructed layers, Rowan builds each painting from darkness towards light. Intricate foundations are gradually developed through successive applications of oil paint, with areas blended, refined and selectively revealed to create remarkable depth and luminosity. The glass itself becomes an integral part of the artwork. Rather than simply presenting the image, its surface interacts with ambient light, lending Rowan’s paintings a luminous, almost jewel-like quality and allowing colour and tonal depth to shift subtly with their surroundings.
Drawing upon landscapes encountered throughout his travels, Rowan has developed an artistic language that is at once precise and profoundly atmospheric. His fascination with the wonders of the natural world is matched by an instinctive understanding of how light can alter our perception of place, whether it falls softly across a distant horizon or erupts dramatically through cloud and darkness.

The Artist's Technique
The ground-breaking contemporary glass painter meticulously paints by hand in oils on the opposite side of the glass. Building layers in reverse, starting with the foreground and finer details before working in several layers to the background, is a technique Richard has trailblazed for 20 years.

Derived from the French term gicler’, the term describes a printing process whereby microscopic dots of pigment-based ink are sprayed onto archival-quality paper to ensure the fidelity of a limited edition to an original artwork. It is believed that a giclée will significantly outlast a lithographic print, keeping its vivid colour for up to 200 years.

Richard Rowan
From the Icelandic wilderness to the fiery horizons of Thailand and towering mountains of Norway to spectacular Scotland, his atmospheric scenes allow viewers to escape from everyday life, creating a sense of intrigue in any living space. Richard is the only artist to be creating art in this style, and his incredible landscapes are so detailed that they are often mistaken for photographs, when in fact each one has been meticulously painted by hand using his reverse painting technique.
As the only fine artist successfully creating artworks in this style, Richard has become a part of the history of the glass art form, which dates back to Roman times and can also be seen in the Gothic period. Unlike canvas, glass interacts with the light, bringing his works to sparkling life.

Yes, Castle Fine Art is based in the UK, but we ship internationally. All of our international orders are delivered via DHL.
To ensure a secure transit, every artwork is handled with utmost care. We take precautionary measures by using foam around the piece for added safety during transportation, and then the artwork(s) are packaged in double-walled, reinforced cardboard boxes that offer superior protection. All of this ensures that your artwork arrives safely.
Most artwork orders will need to be professionally mounted and framed before being dispatched, so delivery can take up to four weeks from the date you placed your order, but we do strive to deliver your order as soon as we can.
Books and gift cards are delivered within 2-3 working days. Please note, if multiple artworks are purchased within the same order, they may be delivered separately for efficient delivery.
The majority of our originals and limited editions are hand signed by the artist themselves. On some occasions where we have limited edition sculptures, this is hand written into the mould before production. If you're unsure, please contact us.
