Known for his vivid wildlife paintings, contemporary fine artist Robert Oxley invites viewers to venture even further into the habitats of his subjects by introducing immersive settings into his paintings for the first time.
In ‘Gardenia’ whilst focusing on disguising the elephant in the deep forest surrounded by leaves and grasses, Oxley wanted to use a variety of bright colours. The contrasting blast of orange paired with the blue and purple hues resulted in a bright detailed artwork.
Noted for his bold, kaleidoscopic colour palette and expressive brushwork, Robert Oxley has captivated audiences with a completely unique approach to depicting wildlife. Oxley is celebrated for his ability to capture the essence of his animal subjects, imbuing them with personality and vitality. His paintings are not only a celebration of wildlife, but a commentary on the natural world and its beauty.
Yet this flora and fauna are not based in realism. Starting by studying how leaves and plants behave, Oxley has then let his imagination take over, using intense colour clashes and fluid markings to bring them to life.
Enriching his compositions while retaining his signature style, this collection marks a significant evolution in Oxley’s artistic journey.
“I just had to create a world for my animal creations to live in. I had to imagine an environment that these psychedelic animals would inhabit. I wanted to stay away from the natural colours found in nature, these animals deserve to live in an equally distorted colourful habitat.”
This artwork is a Textured Flatbed Giclée on Canvas and it can be purchased in a set of two here.

Textured Flatbed Giclée on Canvas Limited Edition
Given Castle Fine Art's expertise as UK's leading art retailer, we are committed to the highest standards specially regarding printing. Derived from the French term gicler – meaning ‘to squirt or spray’, the term describes a printing process whereby microscopic dots of pigment-based ink are sprayed onto archival-quality paper to ensure the fidelity of a limited edition print to an original artwork.
The richness, accuracy and depth of colour is thanks to the method’s potential to achieve a huge colour gamut (the spectrum of colours distinguishable by the human eye). Unlike the four tones used in lithography, giclées often use five: light cyan, cyan, light magenta, yellow and black. It is believed that a giclée will significantly outlast a lithographic print, keeping its vivid colour for up to 200 years.

The artist
Robert Oxley
As a child, Robert Oxley spent his hours roaming the forests around a north-east coalmining village, dreaming of becoming a zookeeper. Today, the lions, tigers and elephants who roamed his imagination are given life in his dazzling wildlife paintings. Immersing himself in pop surrealism, Oxley presents viewers with what he calls 'psychedelic natural history'.
Oxley's affinity with nature is evident in every instinctive brushstroke. He began his art career by painting his school friend's denim jackets with the logos of their favourite heavy metal bands. This rock 'n' roll ethos can be seen in his art, with its loose paintwork and free attitude, which makes it so popular with his many collectors.
