Capturing the quiet magic of a tropical night, ‘A Pause in Paradise’ depicts towering palm trees stretched across an intense, muted sky with the moon glowing softly below. With a strong sense of stillness, the artwork evokes the feeling of simply looking up and taking a breath – a moment removed from the rush of everyday life. The strong contrast between the background in light, muted greys, creating a dreamlike atmosphere, with the dark silhouettes of the palm trees evokes a striking sense of depth, tranquillity and escapism.

Drawing upon landscapes encountered throughout his travels, Rowan has developed an artistic language that is at once precise and profoundly atmospheric. Working with such technical mastery and continual reinvention, Rowan remains at the forefront of his field, advancing a method that is entirely his own. The landscape foreground, originally painted by Rowan, is recreated using a reverse giclée printing technique, meticulously applied in layers to low-iron tempered glass. Working directly onto the reverse of the printed glass, Rowan hand-paints every sky in oil. In this exacting process, highlights and the finest details are laid down first, followed by successive layers that build atmosphere, depth and luminosity. It is a method that demands extraordinary foresight and control — every mark considered, every layer intentional.

The Artist's Technique
The ground-breaking contemporary glass painter meticulously paints by hand in oils on the opposite side of the glass. Building layers in reverse, starting with the foreground and finer details before working in several layers to the background, is a technique Richard has trailblazed for over 15 years.

In his London studio, Rowan then meticulously hand-painted each vista using his reverse painted layering technique. Richard Rowan
From the Icelandic wilderness to the fiery horizons of Thailand and towering mountains of Norway to spectacular Scotland, his atmospheric scenes allow viewers to escape from everyday life, creating a sense of intrigue in any living space. Richard is the only artist to be creating art in this style, and his incredible landscapes are so detailed that they are often mistaken for photographs, when in fact each one has been meticulously painted by hand using his reverse painting technique.
As the only fine artist successfully creating artworks in this style, Richard has become a part of the history of the glass art form, which dates back to Roman times and can also be seen in the Gothic period. Unlike canvas, glass interacts with the light, bringing his works to sparkling life.

Yes, Castle Fine Art is based in the UK, but we ship internationally. All of our international orders are delivered via DHL.
To ensure a secure transit, every artwork is handled with utmost care. We take precautionary measures by using foam around the piece for added safety during transportation, and then the artwork(s) are packaged in double-walled, reinforced cardboard boxes that offer superior protection. All of this ensures that your artwork arrives safely.
Most artwork orders will need to be professionally mounted and framed before being dispatched, so delivery can take up to four weeks from the date you placed your order, but we do strive to deliver your order as soon as we can.
Books and gift cards are delivered within 2-3 working days. Please note, if multiple artworks are purchased within the same order, they may be delivered separately for efficient delivery.
The majority of our originals and limited editions are hand signed by the artist themselves. On some occasions where we have limited edition sculptures, this is hand written into the mould before production. If you're unsure, please contact us.
