Featuring teddy bears dressed to reflect different subcultures, Nigel Humphries brand-new 2025 collection is full of nostalgia, bridging between personal memory and cultural history.
Adorned with intricate details, ‘Never Mind the Pollocks’ portrays the goth rock subculture. Titled after Jackson Pollock and the iconic Sex Pistols album, Humphries used a Pollock style affect in the background and incorporated the colours from the famous album cover.
The nostalgic warmth, and emotional connection that Humphries expertly creates by injecting animated expressions into his still life subjects, whilst prompting us to reflect on memories, growth and the passage of time.
The recontextualization of teddy bears in subcultural attire is both playful and thought-provoking. By placing childhood toys, symbols of innocence and comfort, in the aesthetics of youth movements, the artwork evokes on a layered sentimentality that recalls both on the personal feelings of childhood and the broad shared cultural nostalgia.
The paintwork exudes a striking realism, with the delicate play of light reminiscent of Renaissance portraiture. Typically used for grand historical paintings, the chiaroscuro technique employs the dramatic effect, casting soft shadows. Enhancing the sense of depth and realism, the choice of intense oil pigments aligned with precise layering techniques bring the painting to life. The blend of contemporary subcultural imagery with classical techniques elevates the artwork, transforming childhood symbols into artist statements.
