Bob Dylan

Taken from The Drawn Blank Series, the critically acclaimed body of work published in 2008, ‘Train Tracks’ is now among Dylan’s most iconic images. With bold, instinctive brushstrokes, Dylan reveals another chapter in his visual journey.

Capturing Dylan’s propulsive energy, the image has engaged collectors around the world, boasting his signature loose lines and Expressionist approach. Dylan’s travels are symbolised in the expanse of the railway line, set within an anonymous landscape.

Renowned art critic Andrew Graham-Dixon commented: "His Train Tracks images seem particularly charged with romantic feeling. The paintings of railway tracks are like pictures of the feelings embodied in the itinerant folk song-writing traditions of America...to which Dylan has always felt close."

The train motif has featured in many of Dylan’s song lyrics, from the ‘eastbound train’ of ‘Stuck Inside of Mobile with the Memphis Blues Again’ in 1966 to 1979’s ‘Slow Train Coming’ and 2012’s ‘Duquesne Whistle’.

"Bob Dylan is a seminal artist, rightly recognised as one of the defining figures of popular culture for more than half a century." Shai Baitel - Artistic Director of Modern Art Museum (MAM) Shanghai
