Each of the paintings captures the same landscape, observing how one scene can change so vastly throughout the days and months. Although the viewpoint of each piece may be the same, each has its own mood and personality. Where some may feature the cool glow of twilight, another may capture the warmth of the setting sun.
After Rowan originally painted the foreground, his process was replicated in a reverse giclée printing technique, applied in layers to the glass. The artist has then meticulously hand-painted each landscape using his innovative reverse painting technique to create a collection of stunning unique artworks which follow the moments of change in a single landscape and the feelings of awe they inspire.
Inspired by the wild, untouched landscape of Loch Hourn in Scotland, Richard Rowan has captured its dynamic beauty throughout this collection. Rowan found the loch to be one of those rare places where you can observe almost every kind of sky, from auroras that light up the night, to the Milky Way stretching overhead, to fiery sunsets, soft sunrises and dramatic rolling clouds.
Finding that the landscape shifted minute by minute, the artist felt compelled to paint moments that others might miss, allowing the viewer to stop and take the time to appreciate the wonder of the world around us.

“I do like to challenge myself with difficult work. Painting oil on glass can make you want to tear your hair out but is also satisfying at the same time. When I sit down to paint,I want to paint better than the last time, pushing the boundaries of what I can do.”

The artist
Richard Rowan
From the Icelandic wilderness to the fiery horizons of Thailand and towering mountains of Norway to spectacular Scotland, his atmospheric scenes allow viewers to escape from everyday life, creating a sense of intrigue in any living space. Richard is the only artist to be creating art in this style, and his incredible landscapes are so detailed that they are often mistaken for photographs, when in fact each one has been meticulously painted by hand using his reverse painting technique.
As the only fine artist successfully creating artworks in this style, Richard has become a part of the history of the glass art form, which dates back to Roman times and can also be seen in the Gothic period. Unlike canvas, glass interacts with the light, bringing his works to sparkling life.
