A Hand-signed Silkscreen on Paper Limited Edition by James Francis Gill.

As one of the last living pioneers of the pop art movement, James Francis Gill adds a contemporary twist to one of his most celebrated works. One of the first artists to investigate the modern culture of celebrity, James Francis Gill shot to fame with his pop artworks in the 1960s, becoming an almost overnight success.

Gill was one of the first artists to paint Marilyn Monroe, depicting the story of her life in his iconic ‘Marilyn Triptych’ shortly after her death. Following the success of his triptych, which remains part of the Museum of Modern Art’s (New York) permanent collection, Gill became drawn to Marilyn Monroe as a prevalent theme in his work.

Created using a hand-pulled silkscreen method to accurately capture colours and details, ‘Marilyn Triptych’ remains true to its firmly grounded pop art roots and the major themes of his life’s work.

Features

Hand-signed

This artwork is hand-signed by James Francis Gill.

A living legend

The distinct footprints he had left in the world of art meant his re-discovery was only a matter of time. After being contacted by a professor at the Smithsonian, James Francis Gill triumphantly returned in the 1990s and continues to be as relevant as ever. Cited in art literature since the 1960s and once noted as one of the top 20 artists in the world, to own an artwork by James Francis Gill is to own a piece of pop art history. His works remain highly collectible, featured as part of the collections of many influential museums around the world.

Silkscreen on Paper

Given Castle Fine Art's expertise as UK's leading art retailer, we are committed to the highest standards specially regarding printing. Silkscreens are believed to have originated in China as far back as 1000 years ago. Also known as silk-screening or serigraphy, silkscreen printing involves using a tightly-stretched mesh or screen. The first step is to mount the silkscreens over your chosen canvas, with a separate screen for each colour. Once the screens or stencils are in place, artists roll, press, sponge or squeegee their ink or paint over the silkscreens to leave a design.

Ready to Hang

This artwork arrives ready to hang, ensuring a hassle-free setup. Simply unbox, choose your perfect spot, and enjoy its beauty instantly.

About

James Francis Gill

About

James Francis Gill

When Pop Art exploded in the USA in the 1960s, the art world changed forever. At the forefront of the movement was James Francis Gill, a Texas-born architectural designer who would go on to count Roy Lichtenstein, Robert Indiana, and Andy Warhol amongst his peers. Famously, he stepped away from his celebrity in the early 1970s (although continued painting), but the Pop Art pioneer was rediscovered in the 1990s, and was warmly received by both galleries and private collectors.
