Low Tide

This is a rare coastal scene by Paul, who is known for his dazzling cityscapes. Instead of the skyscrapers, streets and historical landmarks of cities such as New York and Paris, he has instead captured a beautiful sunset along a rippling shoreline. 

The scene is elevated by the textured paint, which Paul achieves by adding layers of oil paint and allowing each one to dry before adding the next. His glowing colour palette is designed to evoke light and atmosphere, while the use of wood provides an exciting contrast as he more commonly paints on aluminium and canvas. 

Experimentation is key to Paul’s success. He explains: “It’s the challenge of thinking ‘What next?’. I’m always working on new ideas in the hope that they will lead to something interesting – for example, I might experiment with resin or mix it up with different sizes and compositions.”
