After years of exhibiting figurative canvases, he became frustrated with the limitations of the flat rectangle and started to ‘push painting into space’. This led first to painted wooden cut-out sculptures and, from 1995 onward, to his signature medium: hand-painted, laser-cut metal.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWith over 250 outdoor sculptures and 300 solo exhibitions, Gerstein’s global impact extends beyond the traditional boundaries of contemporary art.
