The lyrics accomplish an ingenious twist in the final stanza, when the voice changes from third person (‘her’ ribbons and bows) and addresses the former lover directly. ‘When we meet again’, the speaker says, ‘Introduced as friends\/Please don’t let on that you knew me when\/I was hungry and it was your world’.
