Lions of Windsor sculpture trail gets off to a roaring start

As a passionate conservationist, Robert Oxley was thrilled to be invited to participate in the Lions of Windsor & Maidenhead 2019 public art event, which has seen a giant pride of life-sized lion sculptures, each individually-decorated by talented artists, displayed across the Royal Borough.

Designed to mark the 200th anniversary of Queen Victoria, the Lions of Windsor art trail is raising funds for charity by inviting businesses and organisations to sponsor the eye-catching lions, which will be auctioned off at Christie's on Thursday 28th November (find out more here). All proceeds will be shared between local charities, including The Lions Hospice, The Dystonia Society and The Thames Valley Hospice.

Robert Oxley’s dazzling super-sized lion, Leonidas, has been adorned with the artist’s signature dripping paint style, and was on display outside our Windsor gallery, catching the eye of visitors from around the world.

Launch event

We had the privilege of attending the Lions of Windsor media launch event in July. Held at St George’s School next to the historic Windsor Castle, the event was bustling with press who were keen to capture the pride of over 45 decorated lion sculptures on display.

We heard speeches from Mayor of Windsor and Maidenhead, Sayonara Luxton, who spoke about the importance of the charitable initiative, and enjoyed delicious drinks and canapes to the backdrop of live performances of enchanting songs from the award-winning musical, The Lion King.

"Being part of World Lion Day and painting Leonidas is a fantastic opportunity to remind people of this magnificent cat’s important role in not only our world’s ecology, but in our psyche and popular culture."
