Our 2019 highlights

At the start of each year, we're excited to see what we can achieve with our customers, staff and artists. And 2019 certainly didn't disappoint! Jam-packed with new releases, gallery openings and events, we were spoiled for choice for the best moments to pick.

YOUNG FINE ARTIST

2019 certainly got off to a great start when 12-year-old Sam from St Faith’s School in Cambridge was awarded first prize in our Young Fine Artist competition for his Paul Kenton inspired cityscape. In May the competition was hosted by our Solihull gallery and Sam was the lucky winner.

20 YEARS OF LAWRENCE COULSON

Lawrence Coulson celebrated two decades with our publisher Washington Green with two new personalisable limited edition artworks and a book. Like the rest of Lawrence’s portfolio, this collection reflects his enduring love of the British countryside.

He adds: “The Celebration exhibition, tour and book is something that I am very proud of. It encompasses all that I and my work have become. Time has flown by and I don’t think I would change a single element of it. Here’s to another 20 years!”

DAN LANE STUDIO VISIT

We were thrilled to visit the studio of Dan Lane and get an exclusive behind-the-scenes look at his Modern Relics collection. He also shared an insight into his creative process.

He adds: "I have developed a technique of casting marble that gives it the right feel while also retaining the natural cracks and imperfections that are impossible to reproduce by painting. This alludes to my concept of these sculptures as a modern relic."

ROMERO BRITTO’S TOUR

Counting celebrities like David Caruso, Andre Agassi and Whitney Houston among his collectors is Romero Britto, who visited the UK to launch his new diamond dust limited edition artworks. As usual, he created a stir and dazzled everyone with his bold Pop Art creations.

LORENZO QUINN AT VENICE BIENNALE

Lorenzo Quinn took 2019's Venice Biennale exhibition by storm with his new installation, ‘Building Bridges. His monumental sculpture depicts six pairs of hands symbolising help, love, friendship, faith, wisdom and hope. Standing at 15 metres above the shipyards, the installation embodies humanity’s universal values and sends a message of unity.

Lorenzo says: “It is about the future of our children and future generations. It is about humanity.”
