Not many artists can boast a retrospective with Andy Warhol, but Billy Schenck takes it in his stride. The original ‘granddaddy contemporary of Western art’ will be presenting his debut UK release at our Covent Garden, Manchester, Cambridge and Leeds galleries next month, but here’s a sneak peek in the meantime. We took a trip to Billy’s studio in Santa Fe, New Mexico to find out more about his upcoming collection. During our time on his ranch, the real-life ranch sorting world champion taught us a thing or two about his influences…and how to herd cattle!
“I have a cinematic approach to my imagery,” the Ohio-born artist explains. “Sergio Leone brought a wry, tongue-in-cheek attitude to his work, and he spoke to the moral ambiguity of the era. I figure if Sergio could do this with film, I could do it with art – presenting an alternative vision of Western painting.”
Upon his first-ever visit to the UK, Billy Schenck promises to expose viewers to a reimagined Western narrative. Greek mythology clashes with irony, apocalyptic imagery and sexual tension for a collection which brazenly expands the limits of the genre. We can't wait to reveal more.
