Lawrence Coulson - An artist's journey
Lawrence Coulson, our eternally-popular landscape artist known for his majestic landscapes with extraordinary use of colour, develops his Journeys collection with two striking new limited edition artworks.
“‘We Could Be Ghosts’ and ‘The Trees of Time’ are an exploration into the world of monochrome,” he explains. “As an artist known for my use of colour to portray atmosphere and mood they represent quite a departure. They employ tone and texture to dictate the sense of stillness and calm one finds when losing yourself in woodland - something I try to do as often as possible. It’s a total contrast to the solace found on a wide empty shoreline but I find it just as comforting.

Monochrome magic
Lawrence - seen here signing his latest work at Castle Fine Art - has been mulling over the idea of painting in muted colours for a while, and so well-known is he for his beautiful use of colour, he discovered that he didn’t actually own any black paint. “I didn’t realise how many shades of black there are!,” he laughs. “It was great fun to experiment with a new colour palette, and these monochrome pieces are about being sensitive and precise with tone. The contrast gives the new pieces a real sense of drama, and contrast is what I do – sunny beaches are no good to me!
“Like any other artist, these new works are part of my own journey. I’ve been seen as an artist who paints coastal scenes, and then I moved on to Scottish woodlands, but it’s the deep, dense woodland that I love now.
“I want the viewer to not just look at my work, but into it, and I love it when they feel the ethereal atmosphere and escapism in the pieces”.
The artist's journey
Lawrence’s father Gerald was an acclaimed painter of landscapes, animals and aviation, but Lawrence didn’t pick up a paintbrush until he was 21 and needed direction. “I left school and went to work in a builder’s merchants; I also wanted to be a musician – but I couldn’t play anything!
“Dad wondered if I wanted to give painting a go, so he got me to copy Victorian landscapes as it was a great way of learning technique. I then started to sell my pieces, was approached by the company which eventually became Castle Fine Art, and never looked back.”
