Inside the lives (and homes) of stars: Eve Arnold

Home is where we spend time with our loved ones, so it’s not surprising that we choose to fill it with things that are special to us. We love seeing art transform your living space (you can find out more about our Your World, Our Art competition below), so we were thrilled to see that Lord of the Rings star Liv Tyler chose the work of Eve Arnold to adorn the walls of her grand New York house.

The Hollywood actress invited in Architectural Digest for their Open Door video series, which offers an exciting peek into the homes of the A-list. In this episode, the American interior design magazine got the inside scoop on Liv’s sprawling West Village property.

Built in 1861, the house was a huge project for Liv, who even helped to create the plaster mouldings for the ceilings. The historic renovation involved stripping the house back to the brick, which also uncovered a secret doorway and a beautiful gilded mirror. “It was pretty run-down and tired,” Liv tells Architectural Digest, “but I decided that I wanted to take that on. I wanted to really honour the house and put back the beautiful details.”

Along with vintage silver-leaf de Gournay wallpaper, pocket doors, velvet accents and tiles inspired by her artist friend Julian Schnabel, the stylish home is filled with photographs. Nestled alongside images of film sets and her family is a striking black-and-white photograph of Marilyn Monroe by legendary female photojournalist Eve Arnold. Liv adds: “I love photographs and photography so much.”

It’s only fitting that the work of an artist who captured the lives of celebrities should in turn feature in the home of a Hollywood star. During her groundbreaking career, Eve was a photographer for Life magazine and became the first American female member of Magnum Photos – becoming famous for her special affinity with Marilyn Monroe.
