Prestigious international art fair Art Basel Miami Beach celebrates its 20th anniversary this week and Miami is set to be full of exciting exhibitions and revolutionary artists. After briefly looking into the history of Art Basel, this week's Hidden Gems will look at some of Art Week Miami's anticipated exhibitions as well as our own artists who harness similar themes and aesthetics!
Discover more about these below.
Since 1970, Art Basel has been one of the world's leading global art fairs that connects collectors, galleries and artists across the globe. It is based in Switzerland, Hong Kong, and Miami Beach and the latter was established in 2002; quickly becoming one of the most important contemporary art events in North America. Eventually, Art Basel was joined by other groups and 'Miami Art Week' was born. In 2019, Miami showcased over 260 galleries from 29 countries and attracted 81,000 visitors. This show also became known as that which featured the notorious artwork 'Comedian' by Maurizio Cattelan (a banana duct taped to a wall) which sold multiple times for sums between $12-150,000 and had to be removed due to immense crowds.
Stopping only during the coronavirus pandemic in 2020, Art Basel Miami marks its 20th anniversary this year and is set to celebrate this milestone in tremendous fashion. From 1st-3rd December, the fair will host its biggest event ever with 282 galleries present and prominent visitors in attendance including Larry Gagosian. We can expect the exhibitions will be truly historic and exciting.
One of the most anticipated artists in Miami this year is Leandro Erlich. The Argentine conceptual artist is known for his mind-boggling installation pieces. These include a famous illusory swimming pool now at 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art in Kanazawa, Japan, and 'Dalston House' which was installed in Hackney and attracted thousands of visitors who enjoyed the reconstructed house façade lying face-up in front of a giant mirror.
Art Week Miami will feature a whopping 16 works by Leandro Erlich including a mind boggling installation of dreamlike clouds that appear trapped in glass; 'delicate suspended beauty'. Much in the same way, Richard Rowan creates the spontaneously soft swathes of clouds through his meticulous process of painting on glass. This process allows him to harness the vibrant colours of oil paint trapped in layers which also creates a beautiful, illusory representation of water.
Artists like John D. Wilson, Paul Kenton, and Richard Rowan also create optical magic with art but can transform any wall with their atmosphere and depth.
Featured art: 'Cinematic Form', an original oil painting on glass by Richard Rowan, £5,950.
Featured art: 'Rolling In', an original resin and paint on aluminium by Paul Kenton, £6,950.
Another exciting exhibition displays the work of Miami-based artist Anastasi Samoylova. Her striking photographs- such as 'Gatorama, 2020' - highlight vibrant pink in unlikely suburban locations across Florida. Capturing the beauty of the everyday in 'unexpected corners', her work also explores issues of geography, consumerism and environmentalism.
Also applying the power of pink, French artist Pascale Taurua demonstrates her innate talent for both art and fashion in her original artworks. Her work exhibits the biggest colour trend for 2022, hot pink! A new colour that the artist has been exploring, it is also an unusual colour palette for fine art in general. The result is a bright, warming and sugary painting that will light up any space.
What's more, artists like Nigel Mason and Andrew Kinsman choose to capture the beauty of the everyday in their paintings, creating gorgeous and relatable scenes that remind us to slow down and appreciate the art of ordinary life.
Featured art: 'Un Rayon De Solieil', an original oil painting on canvas by Pascale Taurua, £2,950.
Featured art: 'Pink Tie' and original oil painting by Nigel Mason, £1,895.
