Inspired by his childhood in 1950s Yorkshire, Nigel’s touching oil paintings depict scenes which rekindle the memories of all those who view them. “I’d describe it as small narrative vignettes,” he says. “They’re like painting versions of film stills that capture intimate moments in time and observations of life, from the mundane to the profound.”
But what exactly is a vignette? Read on to find out!
In literature – including screenplays, poetry and novels – a vignette is a brief, impressionistic scene which gives an intimate insight into a setting or character. Meaning is derived through imagery rather than plot development.
By describing his work as vignettes, Nigel perfectly encapsulates the fleeting moments he captures. From unveiling a magical sandcastle in the stunning original ‘Sandcastle Surprise’ to a tender kiss in the limited edition print ‘Fond Farewell’, each snapshot of real life is as touching as it is beautiful.
