In 2019, Bob Dylan’s first comprehensive solo museum exhibition, Retrospectrum, opened at the Modern Art Museum in Shanghai. Attracting over 100,000 visitors in the opening three months, it cemented him as one of the most important contemporary visual artists, and made Retrospectrum the most visited art exhibition that year.
Showcasing drawings, sculptures and paintings from collections including The Asia Series, Mondo Scripto, Train Tracks and The Drawn Blank Series, the groundbreaking exhibition continued its international tour to Beijing’s Today Art Museum, which opened to critical acclaim with a star-studded audience on 25th July, 2020. In the first week alone, over 40,000 tickets were sold. Most recently, the exhibition took up residence at the Jupiter Museum of Art in Shenzhen, where it will remain until March 2021.
Shanghai's leading online magazine, Smart Shanghai, commented: "Unlike other exhibitions about superstars, it doesn’t fixate on accoutrements, the personal artefacts and the clothes. Instead, it immerses you in his life and his time, leading you to understand Dylan’s world and extraordinary achievements through his own artistic eye. In a word, it’s epic."
